The EA's are definitely safe. I seized a tensioner on mine and the belt broke - lots of swearing and a towtruck!!! Engine lived to fight another day.

Snapped an idler pulley bolt on my EA82 and the engine lived, but I fitted new belts anyways. Just in case they were damaged.

All EA82's are interference free, EA82T's have a bigger dish in the piston so definitely no problem there.

Some early EJ's with the SOHC heads were non interference too, apparently

Sorry, minor hijack
Would flat top pistons affect the clearance on the EA82?

You should use light valve springs (SU carb springs or similar) in a mockup build to check for valve to piston clearance,
and a dial indicator will show how much additional valve lift as piston nears TDC.
Allow for compressed head gasket thickness.

Why are you worried?

Even engines with valves that interfere with the piston run ok as long as the cam timing is right.

Because of the EA82's deep and narrow 'bathtub' combustion chamber, i doubt any valve will ever hit any piston as the piston is only as high as the deck of the block at TDC
