Auto L Series Q's

Post by camS » Mon Jan 21, 2008 11:36 pm

Firstly. Hi all. Name is Cameron. I'm Tommo's brother and have met quite a few of the qld guys at the christmas party last year.

So I'm looking to get a subaru as a 2nd car. It will be my daily but I also want a 4wd to take camping etc... Nothing too serious at this stage. Just dirt roads in and out of camp grounds and probably a bit of beach.

I'm on the verge of getting an L series auto wagon from a car yard. I'm just wondering what the auto is like offroad. Does it have low range? The car is in really nice condition with fairly low k's and has a bit of a lift already and having an auto to drive in the traffic will be a welcome relief, but if it's going to be useless offroad I might keep looking.

Also, it's only 3 speed auto isn't it? Is highway driving ok? Or does it rev it's guts off the whole time?

If I do decide later on that I want to get into the 4wd'ing a bit more, is there much involved in a manual conversion?

Thanks

As for autos offroad, most people with them think they are fine. The 3 speed does rev high though at highway speeds. It has no low range because it's auto. :)

EA82 motor + auto is pretty gutless offroad.

that said, posty used to get just about everywhere in his auto L, only the steeper tracks saw him run out of power.

I will be selling a 92 L wagon in a few months time, manual in good nick. PM me if you're interested.

all I hear my auto do is squirm and strain under load off road at low speeds, manually shifted on boost exhibits a wail from the tyres, so it does grip :) . 3000 at 80kph with 3.45:1 diff too - time I shoved a tacho on me 5 speed brumby to compare.

The auto from a 87+ MPFi Touring wagon should be an electronic 4 speed. It is supposed to be very similar to the liberty 4 speed auto. Should give you better highway revs.

Thanks for the info guys. I think I'm going to give it a miss. Probably look for a liberty instead.
