TMIC vs FMIC
TMIC vs FMIC
In the interest of me being lazy (read v busy atm) and no current Tech manual (oh and i am not having a shot at anyone with this point either), Does anybody have any info on cost/benefits/testimonials/comparisons on TMIC vs FMIC, specifically for a lil EA82T, however other info is welcome.

Toyota 105 Series LandCruiser (that nobody on here wants to really hear about).
RX Touring Wagon - fitted out for 4WDing (currently collecting dust).

Don't have much direct experience with EA82's and their intercoolers but everyone is entitled to my opinion 
I think for an EA82 probably just a top mount will sufficient This will be a good upgrade over the standard situation (no intercooler!).
A front mount is obviously better (altho a slight increase in boost lag is experienced usually), and naturally there is a fair expenditure required to get all the pipes/bends fabricated up and installed. The benefit however probably won't be realised with an EA82 unless you have a wild motor running a larger turbo and huge amounts of boost.
A person could nearly upgrade to an EJ22 for the kind of money likely involved

for the ea82t use a top mount...the front mount will always result in a greater amount of lag, AND more expensive in 99% of cases.
the best option in my point of view is the water to air RS liberty intercooler..much moore effecient then air to air AND cheapish. AND no need for a bonnet scoop or exposed front mount for the world too see (depending on your preferences heheh)

fmic is only an option when ur tuning is limited by your tmic also with larger turbos were u cannot use a tmic setup. I run a hks piping kit and core that has a small pressure drop, but I still lost slight response and spool time only slight tho!

You would also have a better chance of it being driveable if you have a small hit in the front, you could only loose water and not damage the pressurized intake, so you could limp home or back to camp.

After all the info i gathered before fitting an intercooler to my RXi found out that the RS WAIC generally has issues with performance over 170KW atw so with even a really heavily modified EA82T that should be fine. I have previously had a Top mount WRX air/air IC on another EA82T powered L. It was fine on the highway but offroad it suffered badly with heatsoak even with a fan under it. The WAIC on the RX hasnt had any problem other that the bearings in the pump starting to become audible now.

awk...are u sure bout that 170kw??? i know several cars over here running in excess of 200kw atw and standard water to air with no issues in their liberties

There was a write up about it on the RS forum from Adrian Vos and using his chip and different turbo setup he noticed that 170kw atw was where boost went up but the cooling effect went down. That is an about quote for power but the instance here is not running an EJ20T with a WAIC but running an EA82T with WAIC and to be honest if you are getting more than 170kw atw with an EA82T your a legend and should be going front mount.

I was talking to Tim at Sik Em Rex and he said for the small flow for this motor (compared to EJ turbo's), a top mount will do fine, dont go too big on cross sectional area, an earlier WRX one is near perfect or even the one off the Turbo Mazda RX7 is ok too.
As Dave says, lag is the factor here, not what you want for 4WDing.

Another vote here for the WAIC.
I am running one in my RX and in my MY. I haven't finished the MY so I don't know how its going to affect the performance (the MY will easily make more than 170kw atw) but the one in the RX is brilliant!!!
I have a slight twist on the WAIC in the MY too - I am certain I won't have high temp problems.
If you go for a topmount air/air jobbie you'll need a yellow sticker... oops I mean a scoop.

But he did get one AndrewT. Since had it removed though. I don't belive that people get stickered for there scoops but i do belive that they catch the eye of the cops which makes them think more about pulling them over to get a closer look.

Yes I know he had a scoop, u can see it in that picture. I was more referring to the Bunnings job on the side. ie, having a scoop is probably less of a worry.

Waic FTW, intake temps are awesome and they dont heat soak like the top mounts,
and if u want even better inlet temps put a small bonnet scoop on, i have an XW scoop on mine and a big hole cut out and i have managed to get my inlet temps to 10-15deg above ambient while cruising and under boost it is stayign a lot cooler in my engine bay... gotta be a good thing.

I think all things considered the early WRX/Liberty RS system is convienently packaged and affordable . If you have the spider manifold manifold it just goes on the back like with an EJ . Spare wheel has to move though .
Gee mentioned that a spider turned around (yes it unbolts from its bases so thermostat stays where it needs to) has its TB facing forward so charge pipe lengths to an FMIC would be shorter .
While a top mount air to air core is reasonably easy to fit they don't always cool when you need them to .
