Ignition timing 82T

Post by timmo » Mon Apr 30, 2007 6:18 pm

Just got a timing light. What should I set my ignition timing to on my 82T? I think I read on the bonnet sticker 20 deg for turbo at 750rpm. Since my engine refuses to idle any lower than about 1100 would this matter? I always run 95 or if unavailable 98 octane. Also its got bosch plugs - should I stick to these or go NGK?

thanks, timmo

Timmo - ignition timing set to 20 btdc. The idling issue -> refer to factory manual if you can, check out the tech manual, i think two parts were just linked a week or so ago. There's a little screw at the back of the throttle butterfly with some solinoid beside it, apparently this is the idle adjustment screw and it works off the vacuum or something. I read it quickly but it was from the tech section. Might help solve your idle problem.

Plugs, dunno for a turbo, but i think your gap should be about 1.1mm for a turbo...

Hope this info helps.

Cheers

If your engine wont idle lower than 1100rpm its either got big cams in it or you have a vac leak somewhere

yeah my bonnet sticker says the same 20 deg @750

plugs are NGK BP6ES-11, so 1.1 mm gap, funny, I picked up BP6ES which are 0.8mm !

have you had it idle below 1100rpm ever ?

as SWK says, any mods that you know of to need a high idle ?

My 2c...
I have forgotten about my bonnet sticker and am running 18 deg + @750 and ONLY running high octain fuel (98 stuff).

Plugs are NGK BP6ES-11, at about 1.1 mm gap (i get a bit complacent with this sometimes)

And with an idel that high i would be thinging vac leak or O2 sensor maybe?

Doh, I got BPR6ES-11 coz thats what the parts guy had listed for RX turbo. So what does the R mean? Are these no good?

Well it does idle at 750 now that i found the stuffed hose from the 'auxiliary air valve' It just crumbled when i took it off. The NGK site says R is for Resistor. To reduce intereference so shouldnt matter?

NGK plug book i looked at did not list the RX as resisitor plug, but it may have superceded BP6ES 11 as a part number.

which hose crumbled ?

i have a hose goes from near air valve above thermostat to plenum - has no clamps at all - think it is water ? maybe it is air ?

the one that crumbled on mine goes from the air valve to the the throttle body intake manifold thingo kinda behind the power steer pump. It was obviously sucking in air that it shouldnt have been making the car idle higher. I just used a bit of hose i had laying aroound.

yeah it feeds air to the intake when the valve is open during cold start which makes the idle higher. So mine was idling high coz there was air getting sucked in there all the time
