Centre brake light in wiring loom even if not fitted?

Post by aussiewagon » Tue Aug 08, 2006 10:58 am

Hey everyone, does any one know if the L series has a factory plug in the tail gate wiring loom for the centre mount brake light just hanging there - even if like my wagon (89` touring EFI) it did not have a centre stop light fitted when it was brand new. The reason i ask this is my father had a late 80`s camry and i fitted a centre mount stop light and there was a plug in the factory loom just hanging there in the boot for the models with it fitted so i connected it to that. I`m not game to take the tailgate trim off yet to have a look.

Doesnt sound like they had a factory loom plug then in the L series. I know when your working on a car and remove a bit of trim there always seems to be a factory plug hanging around for something that your car doesn`t have.

You might find your tailgate has the wiring, but there's nothing to plug it into on the loom itself, or that might be vice versa.
You may find there's a spare plug near the RHS taillight cluster in behind the trim.
I'm wiring one up for my 88, but I'm thinking about installing a roof spoiler with a built in brake light, so I want to have the wires there ready to go.

Right you are wagonist the plug is hanging in the rear of the RH tail light on the wiring loom that goes up to the roof, i decided to pull the tailgate trim - broke a couple of the clips (i knew i would) and there was a plug and even the holes in the tail gate for the centre mount stop light. Now all i have to do is find a cheap an L series centre stop light, i mean cheap.

where does the centre light mount? i.e inside top or bottom of tailgate window? Where do we get a light unit from. Did some model come with them?

Smokey.

If your refering to the L- series smokey the third brake light is mounted centrally at the bottom of the rear window. I discovered today as mentioned above there is a green/black wire/plug hanging around at the rear of the RH tail light and in the tailgate (after removing trim) is a 2 wire plug: green/black and a black wire for earth, holes are there, ready for me to fit, So Wagonist check your pm, sound like smokey`s considering one too. Does anyone know (if u have an L-series with third brake light fittted) do they have a groove cut around the light in the tail gate trim or is the top of the trim dead straight (left to right)

Wagonist, if you do get a roof mounted spoiler, post a pic up if you do it, and what its from?

My '89 Tourer hasnt a rear brake light either, didnt even think about it as the old MY hasnt got one - just got used to not having one. But when I replaced the rear inside plasic panel, I seem to recall a spare plug wiring.....hmm, migh look into this, but my window tint is so dark, that the light would have to be 50W to see it LOL!

Unless it's an 89 or 90 model, you'll find that it doesn't fit.
I fitted one from an 89 Leone Royale to my 85 sedan about 10 years ago now.
After slotting both holes where I thought it would mount by a long way, it finally fit.
Don't do it, fit a ski blade boot spoiler with a light instead.

The wagons simply need a hole cut out of the tailgate trim to fit (at least on the post 88 models, dunno about earlier ones, but I can check before I post mine off)

FYI, only the 89- models had this light fitted as standard (I think that's when the ADR's started requiring it)
