Brumby won't turn over
Brumby won't turn over
Trying to get my old brumby running so I can drive it to my new shed. It hasn't been started for a while (possibly years). I threw a battery in and it turned over straight away but the battery wasn't strong enough to keep it going. So I hooked up a jump start and nothing happened at all. Then I noticed that it had an immobiliser in it so I disarmed it and still nothing.
So I bypassed the immobiliser and still nothing. The ignition switch would seem to be ok since the dash lights dim when turning it to START. There is no power getting to the starter motor in START. I have chekced all the fuses.
Any ideas ??

what about if you use a screwdriver or spanner to join the terminals on the starter motor. Make sure it is out of gear.

Sounds like the pretty commen fault that happens in the ignition switch on the back of the ignition key barrel. I would just make sure you have power to the coil and carby, then jump the starter using the old screwdriver trick.
And as revmax has said.. Make sure it's out of gear

if it is the ignition switch CRC 226 is the best stuff for restoring a switch. Just soak the internals while rotating the switch back and forward for about 2 minuets and she will come good.

When I said it hadn't been started in a while what I really meant was that it has been sitting out in a field for years :

Anyway turns out it was the starter motor - swapped it for an EJ one - bolted straight on
Got the engine to run with fuel down the carby but it wouldn't keep going. It has fuel in the tank so it is either a clogged filter or a buggered pump but thats tomorrows job.......

Actually this isn't as bad as it looks - I'm thinking of taking it to get it rego'd - the advantages of living in a country town.......
The rust is only around the arches and a little on the roof. So I probably won't be using your shell since I will be modifying the body where the rust and dents are.
Well I might use the roof panel but that will be about it.

Well got it started by pouring fuel down the carby but it wouldn't keep running. Thought it was the fuel pump but that is OK.
There doesn't appear to be any power at the pump though
I've checked all the fuses again and they are all OK - since this is a pulsed off/on signal to run the pump is there a solenoid or something that might be buggered ?

Yeah Ken, the fuel pump will only run when the engine is turning over. This was designed to cut fuel in the case of an accident it will stop the fuel being pumped and feeding a possible fire. I would say the fuel bowl in the carby has dried up and left shit blocking all the holes. I'd throw a carby kit through it and replace your filters (front and rear).

Throw a carby kit through it ? You must be joking - I've already spent $15 on a couple of fuel fittigns for a holley pump and some fuel and thats $15 more than the budget !!RSR 555 wrote:Yeah Ken, the fuel pump will only run when the engine is turning over. The pump is running but nothing is coming out - might be an air leak in the hose from the pump to the tank - I will check that out today and if that doesn't fix it I am giving up and will just tow it round the corner.

Damn.. that is a tight budget
Ok, check the hoses but normally never need changing?.. maybe the filters are blocked or the fuel tank level is too low. I wouldn't give up so easily Ken. I'm sure you have spare bits around or KPM might be able to help out?
