EJ18 won't start in the cold :(

Post by joe_ritson » Thu May 25, 2006 10:34 am

My Brumby is really giving me the shits.. It's a factory EJ, and using the choke, pumping the accellerator and every other trick in the book just won't start it in under five minutes.

Can anyone suggest a fix for this problem before I pull ALL my hair out?

I assume you mean ea81 ? I don't think the brumby's ever came out from the factory with an ej18 ;)

Are you pulling the choke all the way out? my old ea81 needed the choke to be about 1/3 to 1/2 of the way out any further and it would be as hard to start as without choke.

Maybe get a can of that instant starter stuff and spray it into the carb ... see if that gets it kicked over straight away ... can probably spray it into the filter box through the fitting for the rocker cover return hose that way it bypasses the filter and you don't need to disassemble much.

What's your starting procedure?

With my stock standard EA81, I switch the ignition to "on" and allow the fuel pump to prime the carby, then pull the choke out full and rest my foot on the throttle - usually starts first go.

(Oops, meant an EJ81)
Procedure-
Nuetral
Turn ignition to "On"
Choke out full
Push accellerator in about 1/2 way
Turn to "Start"

Means EA81 obviously . . . Hmmm, and it still doesn't start so well?

I guess the next thing to do is check the choke mechanism and to see that it's working properly?

The choke, while running the engine, really makes it roar. Like, about 4000 in 1st (I'm not sure, no tacho)

I'd give it a pump or three then try start it with only a tiny bit of throttle. Choke out all the way too, once its started push it back in until its purring.

My next step would be an EJ conversion..... but that's just me

How long since it has had a tune up, as in plugs, leads, dizzy cap, fuel and air filters etc? When starting it does it smell fuelly like it might be flooding? May need a carby overhaul or simply replace it with another.
