Success!

Post by 2nd Hand Yank » Wed Aug 31, 2011 8:56 am

I used one of the briquettes that stayed lit for about 20 minutes,
only it went out, again with no log catching...
So I used 6 of the briquettes and encircled a corner of one of the logs.

I woke up thirsty and warm
and my bedroom, about 15 feet away from the fire
its now a snug 20 C. :)

I found that stacking the wood that is starting to ignite surprisingly effective;
once one catches, if there's more wood on top the flames get more than twice as big and twice as hot!

The owner used to keep the fire going round-the-clock usually
perhaps to keep from needing to re-light it. (talk about carbon-emissions :p)
He only let it go out occaisionally, and I never saw how he relit it.
He always insisted to do it himself.

I'm content to start a new fire every evening and let it burn itself out by morning especially if the house is already warm.
But I suppose that means I spend up to $1 every day in briquettes to get it going... I think it's worth it for how easy it is.

As you're down south 99% chance you are using jarrah, if it's dry it splits really easy and is dark brown, if it's green it is stringy when you chop into it and doesn't want to separate as easily + it's usually quit pink inside, funnily enough one of the fastest ways to dry wood is to keep it soaking wet for a while, sucks/washes the sap out apparently.

Try cedar for the fire place, burns really, really hot and smells good too.Christ, we used to burn a lot of sizeable off cuts when the oldies were away - the inner chimney pipe glowed red hot :D Those off cuts would be treasured by senior citz day care for hand crafts now!

My favourite wood has to be the river red gum. A solid heavy wood that's a deep red colour and when properly dry is awesome for heat and long burning, it's great for cooking on once it's a pile of coals...

I need to go camping now :(

jarrah is the best ive used.

When you split it and the block splitter barely touches it for it to split in half is one of the best feelings :) ....soooo dry and burns like a dream, hot and long

Banksia is one of the hottest woods I've ever burned, seems to turn into a red lump and burn for ages before it becomes a lump of white ash the same shape, just a shame it leaves so much crap in the fire.

I've also had over 24hrs out of a lump of old sleeper on several occasions.
