Can you identify what these parts are, from these photos?

I thought this would be a great place to ask what things are under my subaru's bonnet.

^ It looks like the pre-heater equipment is intact, minus the hoses. Am I missing anything in the air-cleaner box?

^ Here's where the pre-heater hose is supposed to be...
Makes me wonder if it'd be worth rigging up my own cold-air intake.
Right now all it gets is hot under-bonnet air it seems.

1) What is this small white cylinder?
2) This appears to be the distributor, but there's something else almost identical
3) This is the distributor look-a-like. What is it really?
4) Top view of a mystery canister, sight glass
5) Side view of the "mystery canister"
6) This black cylinder on the firewall... is it a solenoid? what does it do?
7) A spare electrical connector! What does it look like it's for? Can I add driving lights with this?
#8 Towards the bottom left you see the hole that is probably for EGR, with the conneting hose missing. Would I need a hose to pass rego in a different state, if I want to move?

The mystery canister with the sight glass is the receiver-dryer for your air conditioning system. Your "distributor look-a-like" is the charcoal canister for emissions. The black cylinder on the firewall is actually your windscreen wiper motor. The white cylinder (small) in the first photo is your fuel filter I think???

Only thing I can see missing there is the lid



^ You just need the chunky flexi hose that joins the two here. Hot under bonnet air is not a bad thing in winter! Summer it will be but most will still run ok like this...

This is your distributor with the coloured dots on the wires that clip into the top of the dizzy cap. The next pic in the album is as Phantom D says - charcoal canister for emissions gear.

Next two album pics are as Phantom says - AC gear.



This is the wiring for your gauges and the power to the solenoids on the carbie - anti dieseling and most likely the auto choke too I think.



I don't know what you're looking at here - but this is where the spare wheel goes! Yep, under the bonnet... RACV guy once told me it would have been the last place he looked!

the last pic the hole is for the carby preheater hose you will need it in really cold weather and to pass registration. it goes to the bottom of the air cleaner
it is a sort of corrugated pipe. I used an air con ducting one but it melted off. not really necessary in west australia the lever thing on the air cleaner for summer/winter running is fed by this.

Just wandering,
I have removed mine from my L series and hooked the vac line straight to a vac outlet on the manifold. Is this ok, bad or better? should i put the reservoir back?

Not that I can remember, but I think the only vacuum hose needed in those is for the cabin air recirculation... I could be wrong though as I don't really remember!

Why did you remove it? I don't know what it would do but you might find your revs could drop at idle if you change the settings in the cab... But really I don't know - leave it for now and if you find the engine doing strange things when you change the air settings then put it back

So the carb preheater is fed by heated air beside the exhaust?
I need some type of flexible metal ducting to connect it without melting?

So you think somewhere like Bunbury,
I'm doing reasonably well without it?
Bunbury is probably like Sydney for winter cold.
Our worst winter mornings are still 2-5 C, most winter mornings are 6-10 C.

It doesn't look like a regular spanner or socket would fit over that.

I would like to be able to adjust my roof rack spacing.

Yep - there's a foil type hose you can get and a good parts joint should carry some in stock. I think you'll find that if you don't install one that your cold morning running will be crap and engine warm up might take a little longer too.

Factory settings would be easier - the air pick up is behind the driver's bumper bar indicator so it'd be sucking fresh air anyway. A switch would be interesting but if you've got the winter/summer setting in the right spot you should be ok.

Yeah they like to be painful like that. I don't know where you'll get a socket to fit it, you might get lucky if you send an online tool website an image explaining what you're after.

OR it could be a plastic clip that holds the cover on - my rolla racks have one but is accessible by fingers. You might be able to turn it with a set of long nose pliers.

Not membership status - you've copied the url of the image when it's displayed in large format - so there's coding in the url that the display tag doesn't understand - In the third quote box the top code is what you tried to display, the one below is the one to display the image - I've added the "*" to make the coding show as text for this example. Then the image displayed without the "*" in the code.

Once you nut out where/how to get the code you'll be a pro at posting pics! Here's how you do it: On the right of the large single image (and when cursor is on an image in the "view all" mode a drop down window appears) there's a panel with several codes - you want the IMG one, click (it copies itself) then paste where you want it in your text. I've done this in your quote above
