L series With Liberty D/R AWD gearbox. Tail shaft help
Hi guys,
I just wanted to find out want those who have used a Liberty D/R AWD gearbox gearbox in there L series have used for the tail shaft? I know it must be shorten. I saw somewhere by 65mm.
Now i remember that Toonga has used a mix match of lib and L tail shafts to get the perfect length by that was in his brumby.
So i want to know if anyone has done the same?
Are impreza shafts two piece?
Also could someone give me accurate measurements of how long or how much shorter it must be?
Thx

Not sure what the difference is off hand but if you have a Liberty and an L box on the ground, then you should be able to do the maths.
This mix/match worked in Jule's car because we didn't have to worry about where the centre bearing sat.. the MY doesn't have one, so we made a temp steel strap (which I believe is still in place?). In the L's you're best off using the L rear piece and getting the front piece modified.

I've used Driveshaft Balancing Services in Osborne Park before.
Make sure the CV's on your shaft are in tip top condition. If they need to replace any, they only use cheap Chinese ones and from experience they flog out after a very short time.
They rekon that's the only CV's they can get these days, but to be honest I was planning on trying a different place next time I need a tailshaft done.
Recommend you just phone around all the places in Perth, there aren't too many. Use whitepages, google etc.

I'm talking about the center tail shaft. Are you talking about the cv shafts?

yeh uni joint sorry.
I've had 3 tailshafts shortened and balanced, never paid over $170 except for when I got a few of the joints replaced at the same time.

Hi guys,
I didn't want to start a new thread, This goes out to all the L series owners that have put a Liberty AWD box in there car. I would like by how much you shorten the tail shaft? I didn't want to start a new thread.
I know Andrew you said 65mm but i just want to make sure with the other replies, so if you also shorten it by 65, plz let me know. I'm thinking i can send it to get done and save time.

Jump under your car for 5 minutes and take a measurement to double check.

Yeah actually it could have been 75mm. or maybe 55mm....actually maybe it was lengthened.
Or it could have been 65mm
I think I even have the invoice somewhere which lists it.
To be honest, give or take even 10mm is probably fine - those splines are long.

Best way to meassure without the box in the car is..
1. Measure the full length of your L box
2. Measure the full length of the Liberty box
3. Add or Subtract the difference
Problem solvered.. just don't paint it Red !!
