About 2 weeks ago I went in another Liberty (2nd Gen) with a mate of mine driving to Horsham and back to Melbourne, somehow I realised his Liberty was quieter and made me thought about it... Well for past two weeks since hearing his Liberty and made me think "where is the noise coming from" and I realised its coming from the rear... I changed the tyres from rear to front... no change... and had a another mate in last Thursday and he said you have noisy diff (I'm hearing impaired myself and cannot verify where the noise would be) went to mechanic's, he said your diff is shot...
What is the best thing to do from here? Before confirming that the diff is shot, is there any type of diff oil that I should try to see if it does make noise change?
Liberty has done 250,000 kms running strong - gearbox is smooth but diff is ????
Cheers

your safer bet is just to put the new diff in... propper diff oil may make it go away for a wile but they are cheep and easy to replace.

Came home after spending the weekend, went to the shed found 2 3.7:1 diffs (one from 2nd Gen Lib & 1 L Series diff) The L Series is a better one but the internals has to be changed for 2nd Gen... So will give it a go...
By the way, should I replace the bearings before putting it in?
Cheers

Your rear diff could be quietened cheaply just depends whats wrong with it. The ring gear may not be alligned propperly with the crown wheel, this can be fixed by getting the stub axels re-shimmed. Usually a pro job though.
