82 MY not reversing (First post)
82 MY not reversing (First post)
Hi all.
I was hoping someone could help me diagnose my first gearbox issue.
Lost reverse the other day after a few warning signs. On a couple of occasions it took multiple attempts to select reverse and there was the occasional grind when it finally jumped in. All other gears are fine although the lever now constantly feels a little sticky in neutral. I'm thinking a synchro has gone.
Can anyone else shed light on my situation?
What would be a reasonable price to pay for repair?
I'd love to do the work myself but don't feel that there's enough info in the workshop manual to guide me through.
Cheers

Is it manual? If it is check the oil level, same with auto.
Is the gearbox noisy?

Check the bush on the bottom of the gearshifter, it sits on top of the gearbox. Also check out the gear selector rod that goes into the gearbox as the bolt and holes in the rod can shag out and create a lot of slop.
Once you replace the bush and sort out the slop in the shaft (drill out and replace with a larger bolt, also slot "pipe" that slides over the shaft) your old MY will feel like its got a sports shifter on it!

What Bennie said. After a while these gear boxs have got a reputation for getting a lot of movement in the shifter. Which is fixed 95% of the time by the process discussed. With my ute I had the exact issue you have. If you cannot picture what his talking about there is a good thread if you just do a quick search.

Agree check the bushes first, you usually can't select reverse as the lever hits the body. Try pushing the lever right to the left in a forward gear and then trying selecting reverse usually this will let you select reverse even if the bushes, etc are stuffed.
