EJ16 into MY Sedan - Update

Post by tim_81coupe » Sun Jan 08, 2006 10:59 pm

Hey all,
Just thought I'd start this thread to let you all know about the progress of my EJ16 -> MY sedan swap. Yup, that's right, I'm fitting an EJ16 to my otherwise stock sedan. The car I bought because it had an EA81.

My reason for the conversion is mainly because the right motor came up at the right time. I had already begun making arrangements to recondition the old EA81 and then this EJ became available.

I scored the EJ16, wiring loom, ECU, headers, manual FWD gearbox, air intake, MAF, alternator, A/C compressor and a whole bunch of other goodies for $300. Yes, it was the motor that was recently advertised in the For Sale section on this site.

I removed the EA81 yesterday, at 35 minutes was just shy of my time record from driving to floor :D. I removed the auto gearbox today and a few other bits 'n' pieces, pedal box being one. At the moment the EJ16 and gearbox are sitting in place in the engine bay. This time around I decided to do something slightly different with the mounts and it appears to have paid off. I drilled a new hole in each mounting plate and I'm using the EA81 mounts, these are about 10mm shorter and sit the motor lower. Bonnet fits on without any crossmember spacing! Didn't have to slot the crossmember holes either! During this week I intend to fit the gearbox crossmember up properly and sort the engine stay rod. I am after a few bits still, mainly an Impreza clutch cable and a thermostat housing.

The main thing is though, its shaping up to be a breeze of a conversion. Hopefully will be finished in two weeks (I work 40 hours a week too).

you can get mounts that look like the round ej ones, but they are only about 1" tall,
they have a lot more meat on them than the ea so less likely to bust

Do you have part numbers at all bluesteel? They sound interesting...

Pics are coming, although it looks like tonight might be the night of the coupe. I don't even want to talk about my wagon right now but I might need to drive something else to work tomorrow.

Jaffa, this car will NEVER go 4WDing. Not for the next 10 years at least. Looking at my busted-arse wagon, your busted-arse wagon and everyone else's bashed, bent and rusty offroad beasts convinces me enough that this immaculate example of an MY should be kept on the road . And for the record I have not yet altered any body work to fit this motor, nor will I have to. The engine clears the chassis rails by a mile, the engine mounts have been moved to fit the crossmember, the gearbox linkages come up in just the right spot and everything seems honky-dory without firing up the grinder once. 8)

I'll keep you all posted.

Took a couple of rereads to get what you meant. Was that by yourself? Do you have a proper workshop? My record of 30 minutes flat was by myself armed with an engine crane, a small set of Sidchrome tools and a couple of screwdrivers. I didn't cut anything either.

Next time I'd rather have someone helping me.

EDIT: This was an auto with A/C.

I was not suggesting that you had to butcher her just that you are reaching a point where you are going to find it difficult to decide which car to drive where. Oh and the bent Jaffa mobile was built for that reason and that reason alone
