Supercharger on my EJ noise??

Post by SuBaRiNo » Mon Aug 04, 2008 8:07 pm

I have just re-done my Supercharger (sc14 toyota) on my ej22. Throttle body is now back on the manifold and the SC feeds into it with several bypass valves used to bypass the excess boost when at idle and closed throttle.

Has anyone had a SC in another car before? WHen should i be able to hear this thing. The way i had it before i had almost no noise. Now when cruising i got a SC growl coming from the snorkel. It's not a bad noise i just don't know if it is normal.

Why did you put the t/body after the blower? You need to have the t/body on the intake of the blower. This way it will unload at closed/light throttle.

The noise you hear is the blower under load you are pumping in air faster than the engine is drawing it.

I had it that way before. And i had mega throttle lag. I realise the way you are refering to is one method of installing it but it did have it's draw backs.

I now have a better throttle responce than when it was stock instead of less. After A LOT of research i have now set it up the way it's designed (same as the Toyotas) and im using bypass valves (2 to be exact) to recirculate the unused air.

Neither is the wrong way of doing it... just 2 different ways. Both with Pros and Cons. Im undecided if this noise is a pro or con at this stage. Does make it sound tuffer but i don;t know if it's normal... Im not even sure if i would even notice the noise if i didn't have a Snorkel.

Would it be hard to disconnect the snorkel and just have it drawing air from inside the engine bay??

Just a thought dont know if its that easy??

hmmm good suggestion... Yes it is very easy to do that. All i need to do is take the cover off where the air cleaner is. I will try that tomorrow. I will also be attempting to put a boost gauge between the throttle body and SuperCharger so i can see what is going on there.

there is supposed to be intake noise in forced induction especially if you have a giant snorkel attached. i def leave the tough sounds as they are.

from memory when it was on matts brumby.....

when its working, youre gonna hear it (i love the sound it made)

if yoy want to quieten it down/stop the boost at cruise/idle, you can use the clutch on it to turn it on and off
that can either be dont with some form of clever controllor, or just a simple switch on the throttle

probably not what you were after or getting at, but i hope it helps anyways

The Toyota set up turns the blower off at light throttle/cruise, idle etc otherwise the blower is pumping at maximum for the revs with increase power required to drive the blower. I have never had any lag using the throttle body in front of the blower but I never use the small 4AG blower only the larger 1GG.

I have used the clutch so that when my foot is off the pedal the SC is not active. Perhaps i will try and find a way of changing this so it only kicks in and half or quarter throttle.
