easy as pie:) was definetly feeling it...but no issues...i put the thing on backwards which was a no no caus the motor end was just too heavy for the bacll so the other way around will put the motor over the axels on the trailer and hopefully look a bit lighter on the car:P

twin port heads, alternator, cannon mufflers, swing axle gearbox, way to go!!
Try it out with the vw donk see how you go,you'll end up with more weight on the rear and end up breaking boxes when u use subaru engine.

Hey Dave, nice buggy!

I learnt to drive around in one of these when I was 11 - dad and I had to rebuid the engine first.

The kombi gearboxes are typically stronger than the standard beetle gearbox and have reduction gears on the rear hubs. Kombi's also have better ground clearance but you shouldn't have a problem when you bounce that over anything in its way...

Personally I'd leave the VW engine in there - they're pretty bomb proof so long as you keep the oil in them and the air cooling intake clear of grass - we screwed a bit of shade cloth over this and had to periodically clear it of grass.

Still got it, bros was fixing it up for some old time fun but never got any further than the brake shoes.

With your front wheels you can put them on the other way to get a wider wheel track. It already looks like the rear wheels have had this done (or physically widened in other ways)...

I've been thinking of dropping a subaru donk into the old buggy, just the brakes are the issue at the moment.

Have fun with that

Cheers

Had a 2lt kombi motor sitting in it when i got it which was dead so I was gonna go done the EJ path as I had the old EJ18 out of my car sitting here. Just sold the motor though so dont think I will bother. I picked up a VW 1500 pretty cheap so she now runs and just needs seats and belts etc put in.

I wonder if you can flip the diff in a FWD EJ trans so it reverses direction? Then stick EJ axles with EJ hubs and EJ suspension along with an EJ.

I was out pick a parting today - there was a '74 kombi there, the "series 2" if you'd call it that. These kombi's don't run the reduction gearing behind the hub, they are the same as a subaru setup bascially.

I'll have to get some pics of mine up i think - you've got me onto thinking about getting it going again
