what is the speed sensor

ok i think i've got my wiring sorted and tomorrow will i will see but what is a speed sensor? is it important , do i need it , what does it do would it be needed on my ej22(gen1 1990)

here we go again, maybe. Search it under my name and speed sensor, complete with good photos. All L series speedos i have had have the speed sensor built into it ~ looks like a little reed switch with terminals nearby in the PC

Now , others have found some L's have it , others not

Some say not needed. I have no experience in EJ conversions (yet)

I've got mine hooked up.As steptoe said plenty of varied reports on running with and without.Most L series looms i've pulled apart its a yellow/red wire ,you can pick it up at the big junction box under the dash.No need to pull the dash just splice it in.

Oh, and if it is a carby speedo of which I have looked at two of , there is no wire in the loom, you need to hook up one side of the sensor - a fine thread bolt style screw to one side at the rear of the lower bit of the speedo head.
