Confused about engines

Post by Banjo » Tue Jul 01, 2008 11:17 am

Hello all, I am new to this site. What a great area.

My question is:

I am very seriously looking a purchasing an L series wagon around '92 era.

In my search I am finding some have naturally aspirated engines and some have fuel injected. Are the fuel injected engines aftermarket replants or are they just another option.

Which is the better engine if there is a difference.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Some of the L series came With Carby engines and mainly touring wagons and some sports wagons came with spfi or mpfi or mpfi turbo engines.

This was an option??

If you can find one, You are better off going with one of the fuel injected engines, more power, smoother, quieter and more fuel efficient.

Cheers, Jarrod

Natural aspiration means it doesn't have a super or turbo charger. What your thinking of is the difference between a carburettor engine vs a fuel injected one. The later L's didn't even have carburettors to my knowledge. Also there is single or multi point fuel injection and then some of them where turbo charged, but they are rare.....unless you look at some of the members cars. Hope that helped.

MPFI will be the way to go. SPFI was not sold in Australia.

All L series have a carbie if they're not Injected. If you can find an injected touring wagon you'll be laughing - these have full electrics, carpet (I think the vinyl floor is better for off roading) and that odd bump in the roof rear of the driver - I think these look good.

The MPFI and turbo variations are not as rare as people think they are - you have to look in the right places and are pretty common in wreckers - turbos not so common but can be found without too much trouble.

All that said these were factory options - unless you find a turbo in a wagon -> somone has done a conversion if you find this.

Good luck with your search.

Cheers
