5sp into Brumby Conversion.
5sp into Brumby Conversion.
Hi all!
have just done a rear main seal in my 92 Brumby and have been quoted $500 to have it fixed. Was thinking for that kind of dollars it may be worth doing a 5 speed conversion. Is the 5speed conversion worth doing? I don't have the time to attempt it myself so if anyone knows a good place to have it done and an approximate cost for supply and fitting would be great! Also as a back up if anyone knows where i can get the rear main done cheaper can you please let me know.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers Chris

Brisbane...
if you are going to pay someone to put the 5speed in...id expect to atleast Double that price.
Box, Tailshaft, CLutch Plate, Linkages
and lots of other stuff, modding, customising, Mounting etc
If you are in Brisbane theres a Few Reputable Shops around frmo wt ive heard who may do the Conversion (and rear main) for you.
saves getting it done at a mechanic who may not know anything

I doubt many people here would have experience with paying a mechanic to do this job. It has been very well documented on here so my advice would be to print out the procedure and send it to a range of mechanics and see who is enthusiastic about doing the job for you at a reasonable price.

INEEDABEER my appologies for my rudeness. Ill even add some photo's when i get them
Exactly what is involved in doing a rear main? Do I have to pull the engine out to get to it or is it possible to drop the gearbox to make it easier. I have a bit of a shudder in the clutch so a kit may be worth doing while im under there.
Cheers chris

If your going to do the 5 speed conversion, best to leave the engine in, pull the gearbox out, take the clutch and flywheel off to get to the rear main seal. With the 5 spd conversion you usually use the flywheel and clutch that comes with that gearbox. You'll need to space the starter motor out a mm or two with some washers.lovey80 wrote:INEEDABEER my appologies for my rudeness. Ill even add some photo's when i get them

I'd double check that its a rear main seal - take the timing cap off the back of the engine -> this is on the driver's side of the car, it will expose an opening to the flywheel. If this has oil on it you've done a rear main seal. If not, check your oil pump - its just below the crankshaft pulley at the front of the engine. If any of the joints around here are clear to see (not gunked up with oil/dirt), you've done an oil pump seal.
The oil pump seal has gone on me many times and I've always thought that it was the rear main - only to lift the engine to find that it's all good.
Sunnie the brumby has an oil pump seal leak, a guy at the road worthy joint told us we needed a new rear main seal put in, only problem is that there's no oil in the bell housing or the plug.
Hope this is of some use.
Cheers
Bennie
and a shudder when you take off sounds like the spiggot bearing in the flighwheel if youve got the gearbox out its about $5 worth and easy to replace
