Poor fuel efficiency - choke and carby?

Post by Fil » Tue Jun 24, 2008 11:09 am

Hi all,
New to this forum, and i thank you in advance for your help.
I have a `91 L series wagon with standard everything. While she drives very well, she has very poor fuel efficiency (~12L/100km). She has a tendency to flood first thing, particularly on very cold mornings. Also when i turn her off, i hear a 'sucking' type noise for a couple of seconds (hard to explain).

I have just noticed that the choke valve is not sitting at 90 degrees vertical and is still obstructing some air flow when she is warmed up. Could this explain my problem, or is there an underlying carby (hitachi) issue as well?

Thanks guys, i appreciate your help!

Phil.

Hey Fil,

Welcome to the forum! I'd say that george has something wrong with her auto choke - probabily best to have a look. And at 400,000km the carbie would be due for an overhaul. Have you got the original motor in there un-touched (no rebuild or replacement)?

Quite a feat your L has made there.

12/100 is about average for my L too. Best I've had is just on 10/100 or maybe 9/100 - all highway cruising with very little warmup times (only once it had to warm up).

Cheers

Bennie

Thanks El Freddo,
Yeah its the original motor in there. But a replacement from a `89 leone royale (auto) is on the cards. Still to work out if it is compatible. Another post for another time!

Cheers,

Phil

If the engine is carbie, its pretty much a "plug and play" - you may have to swap the intake manifold to get the correct wiring for your car though. If its MPFI there's a lot of wiring to swap around etc - It can be done but would be easier if you were swapping wiring for a wagon into a wagon - not wagon into sedan (there's big differences here).

Or you can splice the MPFI wiring for only the engine into your current loom - will be messy initially but once its done properly you'll love it. Many say that to do this you might as well drop an EJ in there as its a much better engine in design and performance/parts are easy to come by etc etc.

Good luck with it.

Cheers
