Whoo Hoo!!! I just sorted dash wiring on my L... 2 yrs after MPFI wiring spliced in

Today I woke up and decided that I'd get to the bottom of the problem with my dash display - Ever since I spliced the wiring loom for the MPFI into the rear of my standard wiring for the rear lights etc the rear right hand door has always appeared as being open, regardless of whether or not the rear push button was connected or not.

I traced it to one plug that I put in the loom under the rear seat, there are four of these plugs - you'd be amazed at the difference in number of wires between the different models, my L is an 88, the donor MPFI loom was a '91 model. There were four wires difference at the point that I spliced it all together - a different number of earth wires between the two looms - and this was the point with the least extra wires from one loom to the other (a lot of the earth wires were double backed for some reason).

So, I've never had my rear demister working and the rear right hand door never appeared as being closed. A few weeks ago I eliminated the dash itself. To day I found that it was two wires that I had crossed over between the male and female plug. Once these were swapped to their proper "mate" the door appeared as closed. YAY! Now I can't wait for my rear window to fog up so I can try out the demister again to see if it works.

I also found out why my driver's door never showed up as open - the button that completes the circuit at the bottom of the B pillar was shattered for some reason...

Now to get the MPFI going again... I'll probabily just wack a set of head gaskets on my old "Pick a Part" Engine, til I get the rebuilt engine sorted - got some issues with the head bolt threads

Good on you Bennie.

The only thing that does not working properly in my RX Dash is the park brake light - which is always on when the car is at "accessories". It operates normally when the car is on.

I also wired up the turbo light to light up when my electric radiator fan turns on (switch controlled).

I agree - the amount of differences between the year models is amazing. The DL cluster and RX cluster could not have been more different.

Bloody good idea! my electric thermo fans are both controlled by the ECU. Not that I don't trust the ECU or have any cooling issues at all....I'd just like to know when they are on and when they are off when i'm driving. Can't think of any other use for that light

I like the turbo light idea... I might have to steal this from you too - will have to work it out first, and get a turbo dash

When I did the MPFI wiring I took the dash that came with it - a GL unit with the tacho. Very happy with it.

Now saving to get my package, still to look up postage costs.

Also it will be interesting to see if my power drain has disappeared, if not I suspect it to be my head unit as it has constant power (my sister's L can sit there for a week at least without any battery power issues and its got a poineer unit too).

Okay, new update:

After the hotham trip last night I've found that my rear demister STILL doesn't work. Earlier in the week I discovered that my rear left hand door doesn't show up as being open, but the interior light is still able to work on all other doors - I got a new driver's door switch so that's working now too.

Might have to spend another day looking at the wiring in a little more detail... Fun fun.
