Venoms EJ25 L series project

After considering whether or not to mod my L series, buy a modded L series, or buy a modded Liberty i've decided to just keep the L i already have. The only cars i've worked on in the past is a couple of EH's and my Valiant, and i've established i'm mechanically incompetent. So i'm sure this project will turn out a disaster, so i figured i'd keep a record of it here for everyones amusement.

The starting point: stock 1992 L series with 196,xxx kms, A/C, no P/S, and a set of 14" King wheels (speedy rip offs).

Aim for the project: Create a capable off roader that WILL be driven everyday on the road. I'm happy to compromise on road comfort/handling for better off road ability, after all i'm used to driving 40 year old tanks with no P/S.

What is to come:
BYB 3" Lift kit
Kumho KL71's (27, 8.5, 14)
EJ25 conversion package out of another car. From Lapsed in W.A.
Kit includes EJ25 DOHC, clutch, flywheel, adapter plate for EA gearbox.

Haven't thought about what will happen next. Probably just drive it around until i work out i need better brakes.

There's heaps of knowledge here and you don't sound too stupid.

I'm sure you'll have no problems nutting most of it out!

I reckon you made the right decision keeping your own car (better the devil you know). Should be a ripper project, worthwhile and you'll learn heaps along the way.

Today i bought some JL Audio splits for the front and 6" 2 ways for the rear. Also got a 4 channel JL audio amp to run them. Goes in for the install on Thursday. JL stuff is really clean and simple looking, no glaring colours and designs plus fkn awesome sound. Not sure where the amp is going to go just yet, somewhere out of site would be nice. Salesman also put me onto a Subaru expert in Ballarat, so going to chat to him about the EJ25 install.

Sounds like a plan Venon! Will you be acquiring an engineers report?

The liberty rear end won't just drop into an L series... If it did we'd all be there. That doesn't mean it cant be done, i've thought of how the rear diff cradle could be cut down to fit the width of the L to retain the original suspension rod lengths. The only problem is the Liberty coil-overs are different to the L ones - the Liberty ones look much like the front and require a "tower" setup from memory.

Gutter rash isn't too bad. Bad news is one is buckled, so next time i go to Melbourne they're going to a wheel repairer and i'll get the whole lot resprayed and the one straightened. only risk is it'll crack when getting fixed...

Hopefully the EJ conversion comes from Perth by Monday. Found a mechanic to do the conversion, they're going to fit a pre pump, surge tank, VL fuel pump and upgrade the fuel line to flexible hoses which they'll insulate. Will be good enough for a turbo motor in the future.

OH MY! That car isn't going to know what hit it with all these upgrades.
Wheels/rims are wicked! Car is going to be more then capable off road.

And don't worry bout an LSD with that tread haha!

WOW!!! those are some rare wheels you have there mate and hard to come by. The last time I sore them was an old boss of mine had 2 full sets of 5 wheels and was allways on the look out for more.

Thay were a jap rally wheel made by HART RACING for the my's as far as I know and yours are only the 3rd set I have ever seen.

You got lucky there mate, look after them.
Like to know what tyres you have on those rims, thay look awesome.

I got those wheels off Dave in Bendigo. Will have to wait and see if they will end up on my car. As i said one is in pretty bad shape, wobled like a mofo on the wheel balancer. Three others didn't balance up properly, only ended up with one that came up ok. It could also be the tyres though, fourbie tyres are pretty notorious for been difficult to balance.

Motor is in. Just picked it up from Straight Torque in Doncaster who did the conversion for me.
Got schultzies old bullbar on. Fuel system is beefy as, should handle many mods to come. Exhaust consists of custom 4-2-1 unequal headers, 2.5"high flow cat, resonator, oval 2.5"muffler. Put a new powersteering rack in to take advantage of the PS pump on the new motor.

That EJ looks insane in that engine bay... Makes me want to get my L fitted with an EJ as well (plans are in the pipeline).

Now just the rear discs and lift? I'll have to drop in sometime to check it out

Lovely Job so far, Venom! I didn't know there were shops out there that do this kind of thing! Do you mind me asking what they charged you? I'm in the process of collecting all the bits to do my own EJ conversion and am wondering whether to do it myself if there's an alternative? You can PM me if you like!
