Duel Fuel Conversion, Advice and Recommendations Please

Post by Suberman » Sun Jun 08, 2008 11:43 pm

I'm in Melbourne, does anyone want to recommend a business for the conversion?
I've decided on a donut tank. What are the pros and cons of where the spare tyre goes?
How much should I look at paying for the job?
My Liberty is fuel injected, will it cost more to do?
I read somewhere (on here?)it's better to have separate fuel lines, but I can't remember why?
I think I read to get an auto switch over to gas after she starts on petrol. What's that called when I ask for it?

And what does 'having the head done' and 'install a drip kit' actually mean?

Any help much appreciated.

In Melbourne you could ring Apollo Gas who supply kits, for a recommended installer near you. Landi Renzo the brand, V05 computer and the LCS-2 converter are pretty bloody good tuneable systems are good

Many converted cars are efi so it won't really cost more but it can be cheaper to do carby versions but more shop fabrication may be needed to do carbies so you may pay for getting more to do an efi but you get more and a refined installation. You'd pay more again for an injected vapour system, equipment and installation and tuning / programming and you'd get more out of it in performance too - then there is injected liquid coming soon too more $$$ , power , economy too

The system required (mixer ring/ vapour injected/liquid injected) depends on the age of the vehicle and the requirement regarding emissions. Any model after 2004 has to have at least vapour injection I think. our 91 model should be dandy for a mixer ring set up as in V05

Separate fuel lines ??

Hell yeah ! the gas comes from the tank under pressure in its own line, it is an extra fuel system

The LR V05 is programmable and will usually start on petrol and switch to petrol at first sign of say 1200 rpm ( whatever the programmer sets it to), it is also possible to do an emergency start on gas by following instructions in the owners manual,

The head done usually refers to older cast iron head model cars needing eventually to have stellite ( hardened ) valve seats inserted, but any unleaded engine with alloy head already has hardened valve seats. Many just drive on gas until , if ever , the need arises for a head job, valve grind (almost only use this advice on pre ULP cars) The drip system is a bottle fitted under bonnet to supply an upper cylinder lubricant to provide extra lube to valves and top rings due to gas being a dry fuel and petrol slightly on the wet / lubing side of the scale.

Donut tank is correctly known as toroidal (sp?) tank

if this works, it is a photo of a mixer ring feeding into an early Forester , not a Landi renzo but similar

Hi Steptoe, thanks for the business lead and the comprehensive info.
Any idea what date the injected liquid option is coming? Is it much more ecomical than the mixer ring?
If I go with the mixer ring, are you recommending get the drip kit too?

Actually, thinking a bit, liquid injection due for release in Australia this month and will supposedly only work with SEQUENTIAL efi petrol systems not batch fire as many older models are, then there is 'supposedly' a way to do liquid injection mono or dedicated fuel = no petrol system, which supposedly can have hot start issues if only fuel is LPG. Price is probably like the vapour injection $6000 GUESS

My experience with UCL kits is just one in that ten miles after fitting up I had to reduce the idle speed considerably as it musta freed up upper cylinder on a Ford six. I have not run it with my EA81 LPG only - fitted in 2002. Cheap enough to work out if you want one or not - gonna depend on who fits and tunes your set up.

I got a quote yesterday up Koroit Creek Rd. $3500 ( incl. donut tank and drip kit). But getting it done there doesn't look too promising. With petrol prices skyrocketing conversions have gone up from 2 to 7 a day the manager said, and he has to get some specific parts to do the Liberty.
He first said to come back in a couple of months when things have quieted down a bit. I won't forget that one buddy!
