L series with EJ22 in Vic

Post by Venom » Thu May 29, 2008 12:58 pm

Hey guys,

I've found this L series on carsales: lifted, EJ22, rear wheel carrier + other goodies.

I was wondering if anyone here knows the car? What do people think of it? What questions should i be asking specifically about the mods done to it?

Going to arrange to have a look at the car this weekend hopefully. My only concern is a lack of RWC, my worst horror car purchases have all been with out a road worthy.

A little overpriced I reckon Rhys, considering it's described as a project car and doesn't come with any RWC.

I wouldn't like the Wolf either (could be buying someone else's nightmare) not to mention the associated legal issues. It's only a NA EJ22 and any decent auto electrician can wire an EJ into a L series, still retaining a factory ECU and not sacrificing reliablity or over complicating things.

I'd check with Vic Roads and the EPA since they love to hassle you guys down there. From what I know of Vic laws you might have some insurance and EPA issues with the aftermarket EMS (if you want to be really fussy) as unless it's been offically EPA tested and passed, then it isn't classed as a legal modification. Also find out whether or not a Modification Plate/Engineers Certificate is required for the swap. We're about to look at a EJ22 powered L series for my younger brother and in QLD it's been fully engineered and mod plated. For it's lift kit and the EJ.

Few things to think about anyway...

if you want an L series then that one sure has a lot of good aftermarket accessories.

By the looks of it the front bar along would cost you 1800 ish to have made.

It is a lot of money for an unregistered L. But if you have your heart set on an L then it looks like a good one.

i know the car,
it runs great, and when i seen it last it was in great condition

find out if it is engineered, if not then getting it tuned for emmissions and getting it enginerred wont cost more than a grand... if it has the engineers report the get it, was a great car off road when i seen it a couple years ago

Let us know how you go with it. To me it sounds a little expensive, if its got all that and a RWC and its what you want then it would most likely look better. To me, with those mods and no RWC would be a real issue.

That's basically what I want to do with my L, but a 3 inch lift...

Cheers

+1 Bennie, if the car was all sorted and engineered I wouldn't argue with the price, as it's certainly got all the gear...But..

If you already owned an L and did the work yourself, $6500 would go a long way if you used second hand parts for the lift, same with the front and rear bars etc. Then just source an EJ (cheap as from pick a part or someones turbo conversion) and do the swap yourself, only paying to have the loom sorted out. You'd have a fair bit of change for the important things in life like touring and beer too!

I'm going to gloat here and say that I picked up little brothers EJ22 L for close to half the asking price of that VIC car. :-D It was a bargain though and I'm not sure if the seller really knew what he had. Had 2 safety certificates lapse (6 months +) during the time it took to sell it too, so we definitely weren't first in. Just wasn't advertised in your usual places, only our little local paper.
