Can someone please recommend a good mechanic in East Melb?

Post by apollo » Mon Apr 14, 2008 9:21 pm

G'day all,

I'm chasing recommendations for a good Subaru mechanic in East Melb for an 84 MY wagon with smoky engine.

I'm a new member living in Brisbane, but I've been a Roo fan for over 15 years since my first car an awesome reliable '80 Leone and a few years back an awesome red 83 4wd wagon which I am still kicking myself for selling.

Anyway, I've come to my senses after driving many different cars since, nothing was as much fun and reliable like a suby so I've just bought an 84 MY wagon in East Melb and I'm stocked!

The cost of transporting the car is around $850 Melb - Bris, but I'm contemplaying maybe I should put that money into fixing the engine & repairing the car and driving it up myself, good excuse for a road trip.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Should I just transport the car and look for a mechanic in Brisbane? I'd be grateful for suggestions.

Cheers!!!

Hey apollo,

Welcome to the forum!

If the motor is still running okay but a bit smokey I'd keep the oil up to it and drive it to brissy, if you break down on the way there's plenty of parts between here and there ;)

I am partial to the good ol road trip. And as I said, if the motor is still running well but with smoke just drive it and keep the oil up. Fix it in brisbane when you get home.

Have fun with your MY, I love my L (even though its been giving me trouble - not really its fault though).

Cheers

Welcome Apollo

If by East Melb you mean the inner city suburb then can't help, but if you mean Eastern Melbourne (ie suburbs like Donvale, or Doncaster) or Sth-East Melb (like Glen Waverley or Clayton - bout 30mins out from city centre) then theres Brian at SubaBits in Clayton who many swear by - I'm taking my car (92L) in this Wed for my first service. MAYbe put thicker oil to reduce oil burning off?
Or find another EA engine for roughly under (yes under! with complete engine) $200 and change it over before you leave Melbourne?
Cheers

Thanks all for advice.

El_freddo, point taken with topping up the oil and keeping an eye on it. I'm waiting to hear back from the seller to see if he thinks it'll survive the drive. The only thing is with a breakdown I would be driving it on the weeknd and gotta be back at work on Monday.

L-BJ thanks for the recommendtion, I gave them a call today but the bloke said he didn't want to touch it when he heard the year. I was pretty disappointed cause that guys got a good wrap on the forum like you said. Thanks anyway mate. Do you know of anyone else, doesnt have to be east melb th car will be towed anyway. I just want someone who knows what there doing and not gonna send me broke.

Alpine raven, cheers I will use a thicker oil if I end up driving. The motor replacement sounds damn cheap alternative. Can you recommend where to get it done?

Thanks again guys for your responses. I had a look today Tiger airways fly Gold Coast Melb one way for $69 bucks how cheap is that!

Cheers!
Dan
