4 Spd MY ...Cant Find Reverse

Recently purchased a Brumby with troublesome reverse selection. Troublesome now become...cant find it.

Have done the mod involving slotting the sleeve on the selector shaft, and putting a bolt through it. Have replaced the plastic bush on the bottom of the "gear stick"....cant select reverse.

Any suggestions?

Does the gearstick still move into reverse position but there's no movement of the brumby when its there?

It could be a broken selector fork (extreme I think), broken reverse gear or something much more simple that we've over looked.

Reverse is far right and down/back - same as L series but minus the 5th gear. Don't mean to be patronising, just making sure your not in "aussie 4 speed mode"...

Easiest solution - L series 5 speed...

Thr proper fix is to replace the selector shaft and dog leg(L shaped part that you have slotted) New roll pin and then shes tight as a nuns. But that involves removal of gearbox and half the gearbox. The shaft isnt available through subaru but what we do is use a jig and cut the dogleg off and weld it to the other end. Redrill the rollpin hole and reaasemble box. Good as new.
If want to go that way i can supply exchange selector shaft..

Fixed. I had done the slot and bolt method, but this didnt work. I then removed the selector "sleeve" put vic grips on it, and verified reverse was there, and working. The prepositioned the sleeve on the shaft, drilled a new whole, and it works great.

I didnt want to spend any money on it, just want it roadworthy and registered before it undergoes a conversion.

Its pretty important to drill a new hole and fit a nice tight bolt in there, otherwise you'll get the slop back in no time, as you've experienced.

What conversion are you looking at doing?

2" lift, awd, and either an ea81T or EJ22...but have other problems first. Just found a dodgy rust cover up from the previous owner.
