Commodore 5 Speed.
Hey all,
I was wondering if anyone knows or has heard of a commodore 5 speed gearbox in an L series as im intrested in doing in. Would I need to change all the drivetrain or is there an adaptor plate you can buy. please let me know your thoughts,
Cheers Ethan

Again, the question is why - Subaru provide a good 5 speed in the EA82 setup. By switching to a brand x box you lose the dual-range and don't add anything else.

Dean has pointed in the same thought direction as myself, also by using a rear-only drive gearbox you are going to have to modify - remove your front shafts from the car .
What is ther plan you have , i am not wanting to sound pesermistic , just need to know the reason so we can come up with a soloution for you

rear wheel drive skiddies!!!!
ive seen a long time ago an l series for road use in the USDM boards that had a supra 5 speed rear wheel drive gearbox...car was just a street car with a locker in the rear so im assuming it was just for fun and knowing youll never break the gearbox if u tried

I know of a bloke who used to drag an RX Turbo in RWD with the front driveshafts removed. He didn't have any gearboxes troubles that I was aware of, just needed a really good clutch.
To make a RWD L series faster, would it not be better to use the motor and transmission out of something more powerful? Say a 6.0 Gen IV?

If you get non-subaru gearbox you will have a hard time due -
- Getting custom made tail shaft.
- The floor may be different shape because they're specially made for Subaru gearboxes (Some people had problems converting from automatic to manual due the floor shape).
- you'll have to find correct bell housing to match EA or EJ engine
- custom flywheel & clutch setup
- gearstick to the floor would also require customising
- rear diff might need custom work to make it stronger for RWD setup
To me, Its a lot of mucking around for that above and also engineering requirements.
Cheers

If you want a RWD L series buy a Datto bluebird..... Seriously though I'd be looking for a nissan 5 speed, probably a S12 Silvia one, the one off the FJ20DET motor. Best bet for fitting the trans tunnel and also I'd be willing to bet the stock output for tailshaft would be the same, as would the input shaft offsets, so just an adaptor would be required between engine and box.
For the front shafts just use outer CV joints only and bolt them up. You'll need the brakes attached to tighten the slotted nut properly though.
You'll still be left with an understeering dog though!
Easiest and best bet would be to use a single range 4wd box, drop the front CV's and operate the box permanently in 4wd. You'll never kill the box with stock power and in 4wd won't hurt it, just keep the oil levels at full.
