Reverse conversion
Reverse conversion
I am slotting an EA71 in a 1990 Brumby for an emergency measure..
is there any pitfalls
Which clutch would be best?
Suggestions?
Anyone done the reverse?

EJ22 Dual range AWD lifted, widened and much happier now thanks very much.
1991 L Series wagon, white and perfectly normal apart from the ticking, no I think that is normal.
Jet boat..webbered EA81 with a hybrid tin dish welded and glued to it.

Not that I have done this type of conversion myself but I would assume you will need to swap the flywheel housing (is that the correct term?) on the engine. How old is the EA71 to be swaped?
EA81 engines have a side mounted starter while the EA71s have a top mount (Perhaps later EA71s are different). So you would need to put the EA81 flywheel housing on to the EA71 engine so it mounts to the EA81 gearbox.
Sorry, not really much help! However, something to keep in mind.

Yeah that's right...starter motor is in different position. I'm not sure if the bellhousings are removable let alone interchangeable. You will most likely need to install the matching EA71 gearbox too.

What about the whole gearbox and engine comined??
Length deifference Stuart, did you have to adjust the driveshaft all those years ago??
EMERGENCY....... think feeding out sheep from the back of a Jeep cheroke while the Brumby is down.

too wide with the over head cams..
Not really an upgrade either.
Thanks for the input though.

Is the EA71 from an Ugly or an MY? If it is an MY there should be no trouble fitting the engine and gearbox together (single range only - can't have everything!). If its from an Ugly the gearbox shifter position and design is quite different. So... there may be some stuffing around to make it fit.
Damn, not sure about the tailshaft length.

I'll tell you what I did.
Removed the EA71 and single-range 4-speed from the L88.
Dropped the EA81 and dual-rage 4-speed straight in. Had to grind off some web on the bottom of the gearbox where it was rubbing on the L88 crossmember. Had to use the L88 alternater. Had to modify the 4wd/low range linkage and the gear shift hole. Everything else matched up.
