WAIC's are Awesome!!!

Post by Gannon » Tue Mar 04, 2008 7:14 pm

I finally finished the plumbing for my water to air intercooler and i am gob-smacked.

I drove 10km from my parents house to mine, which is pretty hillly, and when i got home, i opened the hood, to feel the temp of the intercooler and it was cool to touch, like much less than body temp. Before i installed the pump, even after a few minutes it would be too hot to touch.

I was utterly amazed, i always thought that it would cool the air a bit, but no where as much as it does.

A VERY WORTHY INVESTMENT if you have a turbo.

Now its time to advance my timing and maybe up the boost a bit.

Mate that's awesome! I've always said that a WAIC would be the way i'd go in a turbo conversion if I ever do one...

Let the fun begin!

Im going to get stuck into fitting my WAIC to the Hatch to assist the Super Charger soon. I have only mounted it at this stage and filled it will coolant for the hell of it. Even without the heat exchanger and the water pump I notice a difference on a very hot day.

how is the performance tho? thats what i wanna know. and what cooler did you have on there before?
i was looking hard for one at the right price over the last week or two but now was thinking its prolly not that much better than my ATA and i should just stick with it.

Performance wise, it feels a little torqier, but with cooler air, i should be able to bump up the timing a bit, and thats when the difference will be felt.

Since my TF035 conversion, ive just had the intercooler with no pump, so it was doing very little, I didnt have a intercooler before that.

How cool does your air to air intercooler get. Close to ambient air temp?

I wanna get a small thermometer, and take some readings

well it feels quite hot actually. most of the time it is as hotter than the ambient temp and espicially if its just had a workout theres no way you can touch even the cool side without getting burnt. hmm yeh putting it that way doesnt seem to be doing its job at all. because i do recall feeling the water temp of andrewt's waic after some nuts and was only warm.

Remember that the hot part of a WAIC is the actual radiator at the front with all the fins, thats where the heat gets dissipated.
Matt your top mount intercooler should be quite hot after abit of a workout, it's supposed to be....the heat is there, instead of in your intake :)

Ive felt my IC radiator, and the top where the water enters is hot, and gets progressively cooler towards the bottom.

How hot is the pipe that connects the intercooler to the throttlebody, mine is as cool as the front/cold side of the intercooler. That is the part that will tell you the intake temps

with mine my inlet temps will vary between 10-15 degrees above ambient but on a cool night im getting between 2-8degrees above ambient... huge improvement when you compare to a standard setup sees upwards of 100deg and the rest

you get more power and because the air is cooler you get more boost as well,
what do you think you will pull the timing out to... beware as well standard injectors start to struggle with anything above 12psi been fed in to it..

I dont have a timing light so im not sure, i just advanced it a bit and took it for a drive, cant tell much of a difference, maybe a little. To advance it any more i will have to pull the dizzy and rotate it a tooth.

As far as boost, 10psi will be my limit, this car has to last another year at least.
I have an A/F ratio gauge i watch very carefully.

Has anybody adjusted their boost by turning the nut on the wastegate connecting rod?

if it is the same setup as on my turbo then that nut arrangement is so that there is enough pressure against the waste gate that the exhaust gasses don't force it open prematurely.... i found this out the hard way when i couldn't get get more than 4psi and a lot of noise that diddnt make the car go faster... did it up tighter and problem solved...

im going to go coil packs and make up a timing map for the wolf that will be the best way for me to attack this approach...

But to increase boost, the lever must be tightened, which increases the spring pressure and thus boost pressure required to open the wastegate

i bit the bullet and got a waic- which i found for $100. just finished putting it on yesterday. theres still a little things to fix up on it but yeah feels cooler than my topmount and almost more torquier. possibly boosts a little harder too. im happy. post some pics soon

Just looking at your pic there, does your pump pump?

It looks like it is higher than the intercooler, watch out it doesnt get an air bubble and run dry.

This shows the intercooler and pump
Image

Close up of the pump, i powered the pump off the green/white wire that goes to the windscreen wiper motor, it has power on with accessories and run

The IC pump fit in the passenger side guard as if it was meant to be there like the liberty & the pipes follow where it would in a lib too....
