Matatak - It looks like you're the mediator in this post. Here's some info i've gathered to show you what AndrewT is saying, read on:

The thing you are refering to is actually called a Residual Line Pressure valve, and yes it is in the Master cyl, and you are correct in what you say it does, and they are easily removed as usually they are just a little flapper valve on the outlet port to the rear drum brakes and can be popped out.
I think this sorts out the "propertioning valve" issue you're on about Matatak.

If you have drum brakes, leave the proportioning valve in. Simple.

I'm pretty sure the L series has this external to the master cylinder so it won't matter when you swap to a Lib master cyl anyway.
This is making sense to me about using the Liberty MC with the proportioning valve...

And here we have the location of the proportioning valve ^
AndrewT wrote:If it's an L series he can whack a Liberty master cylinder in without any problems at all. Drum brakes or disc.
That's how i'm reading this thread AndrewT... I think Matatak may have skipped a post or two ;)

Another question I have about this arrangement is if I was to get a set of discs on my L's rear, the proportioning valve would interfere with the disc's operation - In my mind this would lead to the discs not operating to their normal potential as the pressure in the line is being restricted. Should the porportioning valve be removed in the application of rear discs to an L or MY?

You need to get one to match. When I went from L series to Lib brakes I had to change the proportioning valve to get the rear brakes to apply full pressure.
