Toyota Corolla 4WD's are SH#T

having changed a few engines over in my time. Even swapping a EJ20T in my liberty i assumed that a crapolla wouldnt be that difficult.

After offering to help change an engine over in my partners brothers 91 corolla 4wd wagon i got sucked into the deal. Found an engine for 350$ at pick n payless, and i should have left the deal there. Those engines are nowhere near as simple as an EJ20T. You cant take the engine out seperate to the gearbox and the engine doesnt just slide out like a conventional subaru it sort of semi screws its way out and with 4 engine mounts 2 of which where fu#*king hard to get out, it took me the best part of 12 hours to get out. And now i have to go put it back in with the new engine, all this on my holidays, never again!

p.s. dont buy a corolla 4wd

I have worked on a few corolla's but not the FWD and worked on many Toyota's. So to hear these comments I'm wondering if you missed doing something. i always found Toyota's to be well engineered and as long as you removed the parts required the jobs were fairly easy. Having said all that in 12 hours i imagine you had the complete engine bay removed. Do you have a manual?

self contained for a week with 6 adults. Island cab was cut and narrowed 300mm to fit the chassis.
Great fun off road. Now lives in FIJI as a mobile dentists truck.

Hehehe... toyota's answer to the L series... A mate has one and he says its awesome, even though they only have a low down gear - not a low range in its own right... I think he likes it cos everyone else at uni has an L series in the outdoor department - its the car of choice for many reasons (that includes the MY's too).

This is the first time ive seen the 4WD corolla/Tercel on the forums.
And im sure ive never seen a modified Tercel/Corolla4wd

Ahhh a bendigo Uni outddor ed student i take it?

one of the central hubs for all things subaru. I finished in 2002, and am still very much apart of the industry being an OE teacher in KV NSW at Glengarry. Hey you probably know two of my mates Wally and Wharfie. And i bet that photo on your Sig is Eppaloch?

Mad Mat; No kidding the EJ20T was a piece of cake compared to this stupid corolla. Yes it was the entire contents of the engine bay, and it just doesnt work logically like a subaru, it sort of comes out scewif, and the engine mounts are in the stupidist spots, maybe im just being ignorant but it was a bi#ch of a job

ive seen a tercel or crapcel before with big tyres and a bullbar, looked rediculous.

Ive worked on a few of models of that brand and cant say i had any problems with them. I have done an engine swap in the Camry and it was done in a day.

theres one with big wheels at my uni. i parked next to it one day, and im glad to say my L creams all over it in looks- even with just a lift, and prolly performance too

Suby wan, im impressed if you did it on the 4wd model. I found all of the mounts the hardest. They just didtn seem to want to budge.

Guess once you have done it once then its easier the next time.

done.

only took 6 hrs to put back in but it is all running smoothly now.

never agian am i going to offer up services to a carolla again though.

must only be the 4wd ones.

the mountings are fine on FWD ones. use to work on my sisters. never had the whole engine out but had miountings out and sump off once.

Yeah mate, finished my NT last year. I started in 2002 :rolleyes: Yep, took me a while but got there in the end and it was such a good feeling. Now i'm in a dip ed this year while trying to squeeze in work with OEG in eildon.

Wharfie and Wally - thick as theives those two. I knew warfie better than wally, we did a 3 day wilson's prom walk together in october '06. It was a pretty brisk walk thats for sure.

And yes, that is Eppalock in my sig - it was below 5% at that point, probabily closer to 2% where they're no longer able to pump water due to health reasons - manky water, mmm...

Well, can't say i've got anything against the corolla 4wd - its just competition that didn't quite hit the mark IMO... As for the east west question, i'm pretty sure that they're north south orientated...

I wouldn't say Toyota are bad at engineering cars but like all mass produced vehicles they are built to a price and convenience on the production line takes a high priority .

From a major service point of view all transverse engines are a bit of a pain because you need to support the end of the engine with the cam drive belt/chain as well . Also if you are to have 4WD there needs to be a 90 deg angle drive to power the tailshaft .

Now on the face of it an L series is pretty simple and the EA donk reasonably uncluttered - particularly without EFI/Pwr steer/ turbo . Its not really a bulky engine for the size of the bay and it does sit a fair way forward of the front wheels centre line . All this would have made them simple and cheap to throw together on the production line .

From a chassis engineering point of view the flat four is not so hot . If you look at how much of the engines mass is ahead of the front wheels centre line its a bit creepy - sort of lead tipped arrow .
Looking at the Toyota and its inline 4 you do see some tech updates over the dinosaur EA82 . Firstly the blocks are iron which means they tend to flex less and can withstand higher power loads without problems . I can't remember which 4 the Turtle has but my wifes old Sprinter had a 1600 4A-C SOHC which is the garden variety basis of the DOHC 4AGE . Where the 4A-C (and 1800 7A) has it over an EA82 is that they have 8 port heads and tend tobreathe (scavange better) . Also it is a dedicated SOHC head not a cam box conversion like EA82's .

I can't remember what Turtles use for front suspension but we do know that MY is an absolute abomination and the L series is about 10% better .

Really neither of these is what you'd even remotely call performance oriented and fall into the economy price range .

I could compare higher tech things like STi's and Evolution Lancers but the Rex pilots wouldn't agree .

tercels are fuked up. they cant drive on bitumen in 4wd coz they have seperate ratios f+r. real clever idea that. theyre a joke, and those wanksticks in the photo bit are propper units. the piss around in a bustedass turtle when they own a F-truck. thats well messed up.
