Who was in the brumby at the rainbow beach protests?

Post by stinky » Mon Jan 02, 2006 6:06 pm

Apparently there was a protest up at Rainbow/DIP protesting proposed restrictions to 4x4s out there. Saw a news preview for it just before and the car in the middle of the shot was a brumby

I saw the Brumby too. I didn't recognise it or any one near it.

<rant by me>
I can understand why they are protesting though. QPWS are bringing in new rules and camping fees for DI and Rainbow beach with out consulting the public. Just the same as they have recently done to Bribie island.

The news areas are so called "RAM" zones and attached to the new name is a fee for entry. It is not cheap either. I am totally disgusted with the whole concept.

Grant and I went to Bribie about 6 months ago to find that QPWS had "taken" control of Bribie as a whole to "sort out the rot that is going on there" (Rangers exact words). We were on the track to the beach where we were stopped by the ranger due to a bloody big end loader bashing it's way through the bush to make a new access track to the beach.

They destroyed over 150m of She oaks and dune grass all in "aid if the beach". What a load of shit. It was during the same conversation with this ranger that he informed us that there is now a permanent fire ban on Bribie due to "senseless destruction of she oaks for firewood".

The beach access track was also widened by about 4 metres for the entire length of it to "allow easier access to the beach" which was told to us just before the ranger said they "are putting a bloody big speed bump to stop cars coming up here" right at the start of the track.

Within 50m of driving along the beach you see the "footprints" of the QPWS. Signs. They are friggen every where. Exactly the same as the last time I was at Fraser. Fraser has been destroyed more by QPWS in the last5 years than I have seen by the general public in the last 30. Bribie is going to be the same.

To me they have no concept of leaving things in pristine condition for every one to enjoy. They also make rules and laws, issue fines and excessive access fees to prevent the public from doing things, then turn around do exactly what they are trying to prevent.

The next step in the QPWS conservation act is to clear enough area up Bribie to allow for a camp ground like at DI. Conservation with a bulldozer in my opinion.

Any one that travels to Fraser Island, Double Island, Bribie Island, Moreton Island and Stradbroke Island all have to pay their RAM access fee. The trouble is that although it is the one government department, each place has it's own fee. Unlike the NSW government that has a "general access" permit for all NP's, Qld has it's hand out for $30/month ($150/year) for every time to access each and every one of these RAM areas.

Money grabbing or conservation?????? It is going to take a lot of time and a lot of convincing to make me belive it is the latter..........

I have written quite a few letters to local members and state members trying to get an answer about these things. Guess what. Nothing. Should I have expected more from our pollies?
<end rant>

Sounds like it is going the way of the NSW NPWS. The NPWS rangers are treating MOUNTIAN BIKES with comtempt for destroying the environment. Thankfully we don't have such a greenie for premier now, but the damage is already done.
