Custom fabricated rear bumper with tyre swinger.

Post by last celtic warrior » Wed Nov 21, 2007 11:08 pm

Just a quick post to display to all interested, the work I've been doing lately. This rear bumper is basically just a steel house stump, with some cutting/shaping/welding/grinding/painting to turn it into a respectable looking bumper that can support a spare wheel swinger. The swinger is released by the alarm remote (boot release) and swings out automatically to the first detent in the hinge. Then you can slip it into the 2nd and 3rd detents (custom ground multi lobe cam in the hinge) and feels very much like a standard car door to open and close.

The shape of the bumper turned out quite well and it even fits the body nicer than the original plastic one did. This is the 3rd one of these bumpers I've made and they are proving to be very good in protecting the rear of the car.

This is the custom lock that I designed and made last week that self-seals when the swinger is out (so stones etc can't be popped in the hole) and ejects the locking pin really well with the same component.

They are getting better each time one is made. E.g. This one the electric release is in the box as seen in the pics. Also as steve says, it has an plate that when open, the hole that the swinger locks in , is automaticly covered. As i have said in one of the other threads, He has a talent when it comes to steel.

They are not made to sell. As a car comes in for some work to be done on it , if the person asks for one, we see how time goes and make one up for it.

Matatak, As for getting one. You couldnt afford one. lol

We dont charge labour for our work, Just for the stuff used and a couple of dollars towards power.

One of the current cars on the go. showthread.php?t=6940

As for one for L , each bar is custom made to each car. So it is possible for a bar to be made for almost any car.
Only steve has the ability to do it. The other 2 of us are goffers when it comes to making the bumpers. Or we move onto other parts of the car while he makes the bumper.

For a bumper to be made for a car that is not being done by us is unlikely. As we would need the car here for about a week and for an out side job he would have to charge for it. I would hate to think of what the price would be.

Yes, Rick may not charge for his time, but I do. I only do freebies for family, and then only if I like them... LOL

A bumper can be made for anything, but if it's not an MY series Subie I'd have to design something along the same lines as the MY one but specifically shaped to fit the car it's going on (after lots of measuring, thought and engineering).

Nothing worth having comes cheap, so yes, it'll cost. But if you really want or need one of these bumpers, it's worth the investment. I'm not running a business doing this sort of work (not nowadays anyway), so you'd have to talk very nicely to me and make me an offer I will find hard to refuse...
Steve.

Very nice job, you have made a bit of steel in to a pice of art.
Looks a lot like the one I used to have on my MY wag, that one was made Suba Xtrem befor thay were Suba Xtrem, mine was No. 4 that John made.
Keep up the good work, love to see what you will do next.
