Thinking of manual to auto conversion
Thinking of manual to auto conversion
So what do you guys think?
It's MUDRAT by the way, my account got all messed up when I tried to change email addresses.
I'm sick of changing gears, and with the big tires on my clutch grows tired of standing starts.

i made the move to auto , when I purchased my legacy front cut .
I could of puchased a manual gear box , but not keen on clutching all the time .The auto has a manual butten on the shifter for time you may wish to shift your self should you have the need too.
I did have to look very hard to find a 4444 lsd rear diff & still need to find one shaft for it .
time will tell if I made the right move .

pick up a 4.11 auto box, swap the diff ratio to 4.444 and your gearing problems will be far less. I am thinking about doign this to my lib
fit a rear LSD while your at it, 4.444 viscous diffs are easy to come by on the east coast.
For the crazy shit you seem to like driving, your probably going to want to either beef up the center clutch packs or fit a VTD rer coupling off a WRX auto or twin turbo. The VTD conversion is well documented on the RSLC board - basically you need the WRX auto computer and the VTD housing

Hrmm. I can't vote for either option. Personlly I'd never buy an auto. I learnt in one and I hated it. My family has always been a manual one :-/... But you have a good point about the tyres. I just don't want to hear about that lazy stuff. If your too lazy to change gear, your too lazy to drive IMHO.
I've been reading on the USMB that you can fit EJ front LSD's into 5sp L boxes. So, what about a 4.444 diff swap? MMmmmmmMMMMMMmmmm me want.

I have 2x trans which I have to check {or Vincentvega should know} if they are clutch at the rear or hopefully planetary gearset and lock up clutch like the SVX?, driveplate, torque converter. I can get through Paul everthing else. I am going to do the same conversion. I have all the wiring diagrams plus the factory books. I am going to use the twin turbos with LPG.

Cool, you can still use the easy to get NA Lib TCU. Normally solinoid C releases the rear clutch using a modulated signal, with these boxes its reversed. So by cutting the signal wire the TCU can't engage solinoid C and you still have real AWD. Power up solinoid C for lock up. Power light will flash on start up- big deal. This box worked a treat on my EG33 until I got the bug for a manual. The auto was much better off road and faster to 100Ks.

thats very interesting info steve. i never thought of using a NA ECU and wiring it like that.
Would mean that I could fit a TT box to my NA lib without changing any electrics bar the center lockup switch.
Are you sure the AWD still functions properly with no TCU control of the dutyc solenoid? I thought the TCU still varied the front rear split on these boxes

actually thats got me thinking, you could easily get rid of that fault code by simply wiring a resistor in where the dutyc solenoid usually is just as i do fo r the gen1 box diff locks...
I already have the resistor there for my current lock, if i ever do kill this box i think this is going to be the way to go!
how does a NA motor go pushing a turbo gearbox though? Do you use the stally off the NA box?

If your not so worried about fuel use the converter from the EJ 16/18 for greater stall. Because you wont have the reed swich in the dash you wont get lock up clutch, you can try a RX dash or use a manaual switch for cruising economy . The drag/drive load to a turbo/non turbo box is the same, only the clutch packs are beefier. The TCU is different with shift points lower on the turbo to use the torque.

You need the Lib shifter to get 1st/low for off road as this gear gives you full line pressure and I think locks 4WD. Also you need the Lib shifter to check codes.vincentvega wrote:if its a later 4 speed shifter it should work fine. its only a mechanical linkage to the box, theres nothing tricky going on in there
I am also going to use my "poormans front LSD" ie two handbrakes so the refitting of the plastic consul could be out.
