Pull it apart, clean it out, put it back together with new gaskets...more or less.

nice rims, seen them bfore somewhere else too !

before kitting your carby , try to work out if it really needs it first

take lots of digital photos of the whole process to assist with assembly of linkages and hoses etc

the hitachi carby's are quite simple really. if you have had any stromberg or or other simple carby experience, you will do fine. But johno is right. If it isn't broken, don't fix it. Best way to find out is get an afr reading(Air/Fuel Ratio), which you may get at a service centre but definetely on a dyno. From memory, the guys at graham west in adelaide said a 12.4 to 12.8 at the lowest point, is about how they were released. Check the curve at the bottom here. http://ausubaru.com/main/modules.php?na ... opic&t=747 This one is running lean.

Thanks for the carbie tips. I'll keep them in mind if I have any problems (although after reading the positive comments, I'm now tempted to fit a Weber). :)

One thing I did notice is that my Brumby doesn't have any protection under the engine. 8O

:?: What is the best bash plate to fit onto a Brumby? Is it available commercially or is it something I'll need to fabricate?

I did a search using the words "bash" and "Plate". Found lots of entries referring to bashing wheel arches and adapter plates for engine conversions.

Try a search for "sump guards" maybe. With the 2" lift you may find the standard one will fit after the bolt holes are elongated.

Your best bet for good underbody protection is to get a bash plate made up from some 3mm mild steel tread plate. If you can measure up all the holes and know the angles and dimensions you want, a good engineering shop could knock one of these up for you for less than $50 and it'll be twice as good as anything the factory built.
Monster Subaru sold to a good home!! Still a Subaru owner. Will try stay in the Ausubaru loop. Sorry

mud rat is right. but i would go aluminium. 4 mm so you save weight, and still have ample protection with a bit of give. I think i have an original i am not using if you r interested in it. I am enclosing the whole underside with 3mm aluminium where it counts and 2mm where it is there just to look the part(with vents where needed) and deflect air so if you want it, let me know.

Hi Jack,
You will find that there are quite a few members of this form that are also members of the QLD Subaru 4wd club.

The next get together is New Years Eve at Bribie Is

Nice Brumby - I noticed that the front guards have not been cut. Some Brumby owners have been known to bend front guards if they have not been trimmed. Since you have Scorpion rims this may not be a problem. Some others on this board maybe able to offer more advise on this.

How old is your son? Many of use on this board also involve our families (sons & daughters) on Subaru club outings.

Thanks for the offer, but I think I prefer to go with your suggestion of thick aluminium. I'll have a play with some heavy cardboard to see what I like. I also like the idea of the bashplate having some give in its design.

I was hoping that a member might say something like "hey, yeah, I know this place where they make great aftermarket bashplates for early model Subarus".

:?: Anyone in the Brisbane area got a wonderful home-made bashplate on their Brumby that I might be able to copy?

I swear one day I'm going to go into business making small Subaru bit that people need.

Sump guards, carrier-bearing guards, front bars . . . there's a real market out there!

Yeah you can delete and edit your own posts.

Sounds like a good idea!! Might be stuck with 5 or 10 front bars that no one wants though.

K, I'll be busy moving house between now and late January so while I'd love to join you at Bribie, any get together would have to wait until at least February. I plan to be at the Feb meeting.

Regarding the front guards - I've heard about the 'MY dent', and thought to myself that it might be a wise move to cut the guards (and straighten up the bullbar's right side at the same time). Having never cut guards before I'll probably need some advice to prevent stuffing it up.

I've a 15yo boy and a 10yo girl. The boy is keen to go camping and touring. He's super fit, so he'll be a real asset when I get bogged and need to use the handwinch.

The girl is only interested in trips if shopping is involved, so I'll let her sort that one out with my wife.

lol

No, my car (the Brumby) is defintely a two seater, which I will use as my daily driver to and from work, and it'll also be the fun machine for when me and the boy want to escape from the girls.

Our other car (now known as her car) is a lifted Outback, which works very well as a family tourer. :)

No, no, no ................... you're missing the point!

The whole idea of getting the Brumby is that it's got 2 seats only. Both me and the boy need to get away from the girls to maintain sanity.

Getting a 5 seat Baja would be the worse option. Then they'd be no escape. 8O
(BTW, I think the Baja is almost as ugly as a Tribeca)

Back on topic ...

Wildhorse, when were you planning to make this mega-bashplate you mentioned - if it's in the next month or so, would you be interested in making an extra one?

Any idea what the freight costs from Adelaide to Brisbane might be?

It's just a thought, and if any Brisbane based member has a better idea, please speak up. :)
