slipping out of reverse
slipping out of reverse
just recently in the last 2 weeks whenever i reverse for more than like 3-5 metres it clunks out of gear with a horrible grinding sound. it stays in a little longer if i hold the gear lever down, but still pops out.
ive had a look and play underneath but couldnt really work out how to fix. any suggestions?
also ive noticed this replacement 3.9 gearbox is leaking a fair bit of oil from everywhere underneath.
hopefully its an easy fix

i had this same problem with my old brumby 4speed, but saddly i never got around to fixing it sorry

I had exactly the same problem earlier in the year. Worn gears in the box. The only solution is to replace them. I replaced mine with a second hand set from another box, so far it has been O.K. Be careful not to put too much load on reverse. Try to avoid situations where this is necessary. This seems to be a common problem down this way. My brother also has one that has this problem, he has managed to keep it going for years by not loading reverse gear to much.

weird thing is that box didn't do that in the last car it was in (my old wagon). It was reversed in really boggy sand plenty of times - although it only ever had the power of a very tired EA82 carby motor on it.
It's an old box with lots of kms so its quite likely the gears are abit worn.

The teeth on the gears wear to the point where they are slightly tapered. It dosen't take much (you have to look pretty hard to spot it). Reverse is straight cut, and just relies on engaging the gear teeth, unlike the forward gears where a sliding sleeve locks the gear and the hub together. When force is applied this is enough to push it out of gear. Worn bearings would not help either, allowing the gears to tilt, making the problem worse. I don't know about other models, but I know that there are at least 2 different sets of internals for MY. Although they look the same, they are dimensionally different.
