Winch - is this any good?

Post by El_Freddo » Wed Sep 19, 2007 3:38 pm

Hey all,

I'm in the market for an new hand winch since discovering the second hand one i got has something wrong with it. Been to supercheap and like the look of their ~$70 winch (its been a while so can't give anyother details at this point).

I've just browsed ebay and found this:

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/POWER-PULLER-WIN ... dZViewItem

What do people think about the two items (if you know the supercheap one i'm talking about)?

The main use for this would be as a recovery item.

Any input welcomed.

Cheers

No thanks. Looks a bit dangerous to be using to recover a push bike let alone a bogged car. Can you imagine trying to move your bogged car with a tooth pick for a handle ? Have a look on Ebay for a second hand tirfor or big haul. You might be able to pick up a good one for around $200.

Mate, I appreciate what you are trying to do, but using **** like that for recovery is simply asking for death to occur.

If you want a winch, get Barry (post-er above) to fix you up with something.

Ive used them and mate they are scary to use.... there are a lot of accidental possible points on them - easy to say but nothing has happened so far because I have been very careful, again I would recommend you to wear gloves when operating it. I would get something lot better than that.

I've used something like that before to pull a car up a hill sideways(ish.) They are tough, but I don't like being near the cable that has the weight of the car on it...

And if you go for a car electric winch, then its just going to weigh your car down.
Can't think of a better solution though. Maybe just always trail with another car as well?

Looks like you've got it too Bennie. But they are right, it looks very flimsy and not to be trusted with the weight of a car. But having said that its still better than nothing. You could use it to pull rocks out of the way or fallen tree branches etc, doesn't have to be a car. And for the $70 or whatever they are asking its still cheap. You get what u pay for however, which is fine so long as you know its limitations and don't expect it to perform like a much more expensive one.

I say go for it, providing you use it like a unit that's not designed to pull out cars every day. And should you get your self in trouble one day it might mean the difference between getting home or spending the night stuck somewhere.

Thanks everyone for your input, greatly appreciated. I'm not in a situation at the moment where i can afford unit such as what Lightening Silver RX has suggested, which seems to be the goods with everyone. I'll be keeping an eye out for a unit in the future.

I'll probabily get one for the interum, i've never been stuck before but that day could be around the corner, and since i pretty much do all my 4 wheeling in one car i need something.

Cheers
