Budding chemists ? tank cleaning ?

Post by steptoe » Mon Sep 17, 2007 3:19 am

got me tank out of the GLTA sun morn, dumped its fuel with the failing fuel pump

NOW, looking for chemical cleaning suggestions to remove the powdery oxide stuff from the insides to eliminate rooting the new fuel pump, thinking surfactant to release and foam up - Handy andy and pressure wash and natural dehydration for what i cannot get out by shake, blow etc

hydrochloric acid (aka muriatic acid) is whta comes up on google , had some on hand so gave that a sizzle, first gave it a pressure wash inside and out, hopefully neutered it with a kilo of bicarbonate of soda afterwards, and a bloody good flush or three. Then attempted to enter the Darwin awards by blow drying it with my heat gun !! no nothing went wrong, just felt a little uneasy seeing vapour exiting from tank , hoping it could not possibly be petrol vapour. Not wanting to be an urban legend i leave to dry overnight with a good spray of wd40. Looks really shny clean inside now.
