OK error 12 is check 12volts at BW+ wire at test conn 1 under dash and ground BR- if approx 12V they say replace ecu. If not approx 12V and AT says harness between inhibitor switch and ecu is disconnected.

spark does have to get from coil to plugs through coil lead then through carbon brush under the dizzy cap then on and along rotor button and out to various spark plug leads..... philips screw driver and look at the dizzy cap insides ?

Hi Gang
The coil fine, the conections to the AT and the ECU fine, changed the ECU, I think its the Magnetic units in the dissy. From the book i got.. the dissy energizes the coil and not the other way around. But im open to suggestions.
So i will change the dissy over.
Cheers Pete

If you have a spare dizzy from a carb engine put it in there and see if you have any luck. Basically with the flapper AFM if the dizzy aint working the engine wont run.

... power to pos side of coil no power to neg side, no spark to leads. the coil isnt warming up when you leave ignition on so the coil isnt energising. The timing belts are fine and the car was driving fine until this, I believe the coil was the original problem when i replace it im sure the wiring was correct when i reassembled it and the wiring diagram shows the simlar wires but slightly different colours.
Cheers Pete
hey, that is correct, the electronic dizy switches off when ignition on and no rotation, hence you don't get current through the coil, its another reason why these coils need no ballast resistor. And the dizy automatically adjusts the "dwell" or coil on time, with respect to rpm.

The only valid simple test is - remove a spark plug lead, hold it near the block, get someone to turn ignition over and look for spark.

also, sure about timing belt?, for rhs, just take the dizy cap off, rotate engine and confirm that the dizy is rotating too.

best of luck with it

Your ignition isn't stuffed is it? My old torana's ignition barrel was very hot one day before the car stopped running. We came to the conclusion that the ignition was stuffed when in the on position - engine would run in the start position and die when flicked into the "on" position.

Might be something to look at...

For the viewers at home no the distributor does not power the coil in a 3 ECU plug system . The distributor needs a means to switch the coil on and off so it can collapse its field and discharge through its tower and coil lead .
There are a couple of ways to do it and from memory the magnetic voltage generator system may be called the Hall Effect method .

All they've done is replaced the contact breaker points with a more uniform and reliable electric or electronic switch .

Really provided the electronics are working and the coil and its power supply and earth ok the rest is up to the cap leads and plugs .

One thing you must have is the RPM signal to the computer or it won't fire its injectors .

A .

just cleaning out my inbox and found this, sort of finshes a thread, look at the dates !!
Pete PM'd me Sept 2010 with the happy result

"Just an update on the vortex. I finally got it running after i read a post on the forum about the ignition modules in the dissys breaking.
So today i tried again reseting the timing and kept trying untill it fired and ran.
Now it looks like i will rebuild the car and put it back on the road as a daily drive like it was before.
Cheers Pete"
