I need some serious auto eletrical knowledge to sovle dead vortex

Post by coupe » Tue Sep 04, 2007 9:11 pm

Hi Gang
The vortex died in the middle of the Narrows bridge last night. I have the following .. EA82 mpfi.
After the car cooled for an hour it started for 20 seconds then died.
Trouble code 12 which is common in these.
No spark to coil (replaced coil today)
power to fuse links
Power to fuse box
Petrol to engine
Power to coil
Motor turns over when started / starter motor good
igniton relay clicking in when activated.
Any ideas or if someone can get my baby to run im happy to pay them for there troubles. Im having to work long hours so i dont get to work on tex.
Cheers Pete

Isn't code 12 the starter circuit?

Sounds like something getting hot and going open or short... Possible look at Leads, earth strapping (read negative wire to engine), fault temp switch, (i.e telling ECU the engine is hotter then it is, thus ECU thinking engine is red hot, killing engine). That is just a couple of ideas off the top of my head.

Thanks for the help guys

The code 12 is starter circut but the function works. I have seen this come up on a few mpfi's. The earth is fine and multi meter shows zero resist.
The water temp sensor i changed for a spare but no difference.
I will do voltage checks tomrrow night.

Are you able to "roll start" without the starter being used? if the engine starts okay its possible the starter is on its way out. - Easy way to find out... unless its automatic!!!! argh!

If the engine cranks over when the key is turned but the ecu is showing a code for the starter circuit, it shows that the wire that tells the ecu that your trying to start the car is not connected.

Is your engine a 3plug/flapper maf type or the later 4 plug/hotwire maf type?

Steering off the electrical path... which we are currently not sure it is... could the timing belt have simply skipped a tooth?

first ask is it spark or fuel ( or other)

got spark?

if so is it fuel ? to see if it is fuel and you got spark spray WD40 if no starter stuff in a can available. spray into an intake air duct and see while someone cranks it

Hi Gang
I got fuel , i put enough areo start to get to the moon and back, power from ignition to front of car, power to pos side of coil no power to neg side, no spark to leads. the coil isnt warming up when you leave ignition on so the coil isnt energising. The timing belts are fine and the car was driving fine until this, I believe the coil was the original problem when i replace it im sure the wiring was correct when i reassembled it and the wiring diagram shows the simlar wires but slightly different colours.

there is a theme to those wires on most old subes - yellows to one side and blacks to the other. maybe tell us what you have connected to each post

Agreed Chris, under the coil is a small black thing, its your ignitor on the hotwire AFM cars. When they die the results are as you describe.

Hi Gang

The Tex is a 1985 flapper type. Neg side 3 wires 2 x white /yellow, 1 x grey.
Pos 3 x wire, two black /white 1 x red.

Theres a small unit on the fire wall that has one red wire (pos) and black/white to ground. I believe its a radio supression thing for the stereo.
I will disconnect it in case its shorted.

Cheers Pete.

did you also check the dizzy was plugged in and not loose? not totally sure on how that one sets up but I 'think' the CAS is in there. no position - no fire.
