It is an excellent way to do this as when you go camping you can just lift it all out of your car and sit it in the tent or shade some where. Simply back the car up to it every now and then to charge the battery up.
Thanks, will probably go this way and am interested to know approximate charge time...How long would I need to run the car each time and how long a drive would it take to recharge fully (sealed 100amp hour).

assume a 1/2 flat battery

50 Amp Hour

At 50A charge rate it would take 1 hour.

At 25A charge rate it would take 2 hours.

ie you need to accurately know the charge rate to know how long it will take

Thanks vincentvega.
Have put a bid in on this ebay item: http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll ... :IT&ih=012

Plan to wire this from the vehicle battery through to the portable battery box with 100amp hour sealed century batt'. All up cost should be about $500, providing I can do the wiring...You guys will hear from me re the wiring as I have absolutly no idea:confused:

Those ones are ok, but I doubt there will be enough wire in the kit to reach the rear of your car. I also wouldn't bid much higher than that.

Didn't think about the wire...Just assumed that they would provide enough.
So you don't beleive they are worth the $360RRP that was quoted in the ad?

Go into a jaycar/leading edge electronics and (assuming you don't get a trained monkey) ask them about solid state relays.

The amount of power these things can handle is crazy, no moving parts, no welding or magnetising of contacts, very impressive, take this fella for example.

Is the jaycar alternative you suggest used in place of the isolator?
Might have to investigate further:???:

To add a little to what Vincent was saying.
I have a ammeter and I notice even with my EJ alt (70amps?) when the battery is too flat to start the car it only charges at around 24A for about 15mins then drops back slowly to 15A over another 15mins and by the end of the hour it's back down to 7-9A. So although the alt is 70A charge, you'll be hard pressed to get that much out of it unless you have a few hundred Ah of battery and they were completely flat.

Jaycar sell a few different isolators around the $100 mark.I brought 5Metres of wire ,can't remember the guage, and terminals for around $30 to $40 to run abattery in the back of a L of them. For around $150 + battery cost you ccould be setup.
