Gearbox shagged!

Post by leebag » Thu Aug 30, 2007 9:53 pm

hey guys, i own a '87 RX turbo aust delivered. about 2 kms from home the was a crunch and then NO more FWD. had to pull in and see what was wrong??? AND THE BLOODY COPS PULL UP! whats up with your car??? "bloody gear box!!" any way worked out RWD works and nursed it home? no the same car in RWD!
Any way some Q's?

new box $$$? i've been quoted $450
install by pro's??? Quote <$1000 inc new CV
and am i really going to kill my car driving for a short time in RWD?

yes i am replacing the clutch and clutch cable as well if i have to do the gearbox

you're advice boys would be golden!!!

Just and idea any awd boxes around??

youve probably blown a cv joint. if it works in 4wd only(rear wheels drive) then id almost say 100% youve done a cv joint. Did you notice any clicking whilst turning around corners and stuff?

have a feel of the cv joints to see it there's any loose metal floating around

one problem is that new cv's can be expensive

and rwd is fine for the time being.

Yep I concur, sounds like not as bad as u first thought.
I made the same mistake when I first had an L series....even went and bought another gearbox before finding it was just a smashed front CV!
(that was years ago, only just sold that spare gearbox last week too)

gearbox is fine then i wouldnt wanna go to the effort of changing a box unless you actually blow a gear like i have in the last 4 weeks.
btw AWD gearboxes like yours are getting rarer dude.
just get a new cv -about $180 and you should be right for a while.

lol having the cops rock up when u break something, and then giving u another canary or other fine( not that that happened) that would be my worst nightmare
