Subaru in the news (from 2003)

Post by Willie » Thu Aug 23, 2007 9:42 pm

Found an old newspaper article when cleaning out some paperwork the other day. It's from the Sydney Morning Herald in 2003 in an article titled "The benefit of hindsight".

"Decades before the Forester, Subaru seemed to answer a question no one except a few Japanese farmers were asking.
It had produced an all-wheel-drive version of the fragile-looking (and clumsily named) FF-1 1100 wagon. Displayed at the 1971 Tokyo Motor Show, this went into production soon afterwards with the slightly beefier Leone sheetmetal and a 1.4 litre engine.
Subaru had been the first to realise how easily and cheaply front-wheel-drive can be extended to all-wheel-drive.
The original 4WD Subie lacked a central differential, so had to be driven in 2WD on sealed surfaces.
Nevertheless, it was as tough as nails and could go most places a big heavy 4WD could go, yet was much cheaper to buy and more economical to run; further, it was no less comfortable than a standard Subaru of the day.
Unlike many pioneering stories, this one has a happy ending. Subaru stuck yo it's guns. The concept developed into the more sumptuous Legacy (Liberty in Australia), gained a centre diff in the process and became a truly mainstream "all-wheel-drive"."

Not too bad a wrap from a motoring journalist on our beloved Subaru's.

Has anyone else got some interesting articles from the press on Subaru's?
Willie.
