Fear is good. You can't smell it, hear it coming or even see it.

Spooky stuff. It Bites.

crundle wrote:Just curious Phizinza, how do you set up the welder when you are using a second battery to do it? I have no idea about welding whatsoever, hoping to do a short course after Uni finishes in November this year, but I was telling some guys at work about taking a welder away on trips and they were unsure about how you actually do it.
Fredsub pretty much covered anything.. It's best to know how to arc weld before you do this. And it's also good to have an understanding of how electricity works (i.e batteries, cable sizes, etc) but not necessary.
I've used both arc and gasless mig welders. I've never done any courses or anything, but I trust my welds with my life (I cut and welded my front control arms on my Brumby, so it's pretty much my life if one were to fail.) It's not hard to do, just need plenty of experience doing it and you'll get good.

Yeah, I reckon a short welding course would be the go, would like to knock up a rear tyre/jerry can rack one day....

Went from Toowoomba to Bundaberg on the weekend to play music for a friends wedding .trip was about a 5 hr run with the brumby well and truly loaded and the misses on board. At bundaberg, the rear wheel is going click click scrape scrape....

I went to repco...grabbed some split pins and at the mates place, cranked up the left rear castle nut standing on a huge shifter as tight as I could get it.

That shut it up...

Moral to the story...I've got all that stuff at home...I raided the subaru dealer here in Toowoomba a while back and had new nuts and washers...never going on a trip again without spare split pins..nuts washers and a decent socket and extension bar ...

Its probably covered in this thread somewhere already, but i keep thinking that a length of threaded rod with washers and nuts, a foot long section of RHS of whatever size your lift is, a hacksaw, and the ability to weld and you could survive just about anything if you were out there alone
