EA82 and box into a Brumby?

Post by Fang » Tue Jun 26, 2007 7:08 pm

The old man is looking at buying a Brumby (post '83). Currently, he has a crappy (and I do mean crappy) L Series D/R wagon with a good EA82 and gearbox.

How hard is it to mount an EA82 + Box into a Brumby?

I don't want to start a "motor" war about which type is better.

Thanks in advance :)

I do belive that the ea82 is harder to fit than an ej22 sohc because they are so much wider, wider than any dohc motor i belive

Back up Ian, the engine isn't worth the trouble, simply to much chassis rail bashing and no real power gain for the work, my opinion (Subaru Quoted EA81 at about 55kw and EA82 60kw). The gearbox is a different story it will fit pretty easily. It bolts up to engine, etc. Rough list of what you will need, tailshaft, custom clutch setup (mix and match MY and L) and L CVs i believe.

Cheers

The reason for the swap is not a power issue - its about using an EA82 motor that was reconditioned 3000km ago. Sounds like its not a bolt in job though. Thanks for the replies.

different strokes for different folks.

I have two Brumbys and a coupla L's and their motors EA82T and have been tinkering with EA82T in the Brumby IDEA for a while and have read all comments in here and been surprised to see in the flesh a standard height Brumby same as MY 79-94? wagons. It had an EA82T in it with no rail changes and about 6mm freeplay between rocker and rail, also had the L 5 speed box.

If this is enough not to knock with good mounts i'd give it a shot

If you only have the EA82 non turbo it is same size and should be easy to drop engine to tailshaft in, using flat 1/4 inch 2" wide, plate to mount the centre bearing to the floor. BUT just look at the thermostat housing on your L and the one on the EA81 they may just retain hose to match manifold I DO NOT KNOW YET

and you retain the brumby CV shafts as they are

i think Dane [vincentvega] and scott did a ea82T +ea auto into brumby some time ago,if a auto and turbo fits a manual and non turbo would have to be a easier fit.Maybe get onto one of them.

......and I have a good condition 'EA82 Turbo' that I am trying to sell too...

I could have it ripped out of the 'retired' Vortex that I have and have it freighted to you for a small fee.....

I thought the EA82 fits in the Brumby, maybe I'm wrong?

If it's a carbed EA82, it's very easy to wire into the EA81 loom.
Gearbox will either need modded 4sp mounts or a bit harder modded 5sp mounts. Or maybe just build a full 5sp crossmember to fit the EA81 car like I did for my FT4WD box?

Then you need to mount a centre bearing or increase the length of the prop by something like 170mm?

EA82 shifter should mount of to the brumby pretty easy. My brumby even had the captive bolt to hold the shifters rear mount.

Oh, I think you need to bash the trans tunnel if you don't have a lift for the 5sp to fit in also.. I think...

that reminds me, yes the useless cast threaded boss that is up top drivers side that wants to bang on your tunnel you cut it off. I also found that captive nut.
