EJ 22 Rebuild Options

Post by robdddd » Sun Jun 24, 2007 12:03 pm

Finally got the greenlight from wife to rebuild the EJ22 in my L series, it has been a hectic six months of moving house and renovating and can finally see some spare time after the end of financial year.

EJ22 is now blowing some nice blue smoke screens when taking off quickley and first thing in the morning....if driven normally it isn't bad though so doesn't attract attention yet. Using about 1L of oil/1000km and "stop smoke" made little difference, could this indicate more likely to be valve stem seals? Hope to compression test next weekend which may assist with determining the problem.

Option 1, really basic, New rings and get the heads reconditioned

Option 2, Current prefered plan; new bottom end bearings depending on what they look like, new rings and throw in some tighe camshafts (that is if they ever respond to the emails I sent) when reconditioning heads.

Option 3, as per option 2 but throw in an EJ25 crankshaft, is this as simple swap or is there something else i should know and where could a crankshaft be obtained in Perth?

Off to clean up the shed to make room for the car.

Have a chat to WaggaClint on here. He did a rebuild on Subarino's EJ22 in Hatchy and Dave is very happy with the result.

Going thru this right now.Recommend doing the bottom end if your going this far into it.I had the same symptons as you describe and even when the engineer looked at it commented on good the bore looked and the bearings were. Also replace water pump and anything else that looks suspect.

Unless you are going to sell it in the near future do the job right and do a complete overhaul then you will be sure of the motor and not have to do anything but change the oil every now and then to make it happy
