EA82T lurching

Post by julian » Tue Jan 16, 2007 3:17 pm

Hey all,
Under any significant load (upwards of 1/2 or 2/3 throttle) around 2500-3500rpm the EA82T lurches violently enough to make me back off the throttle.
Most noticeable in second gear but will do it in others if you give it some.

Car is subject to pretty docile driving and runs 95-98 octane at ALL times, but hasn't had a service for a while.

I have only had the car for ~7000km so not very familiar with this motor but is there anything that I can check before it gets serviced?

Cheers
Julian

lurching....this could also be fast pulses of deceleration, ie what i mean is theres instance of normal fuel curve flow, and then momentarily much less. So any of say fuel pressure (regulator?,fuel pump?) or ignition missing....or maybe a sensor giving erratic readings (maybe the TPS).

Nah, boost doesnt go above an indicated 8psi on my gauge...

Wasn't doing it today so maybe i will just get it serviced and see how it fares.

when my turbo decided it woulnt work anymore and make a griding noise and leak oil it was overboosting and when it hit 9psi it cut out the fuel....

Plugs... put new plugs in and gap them to .8

does what your feeling feel like a shudder or like the car is stabbing... if so that was my problem and it was the plugs (mine was also backfiring but only after installing the WAIC)

hopefully this helps

I'm having the same problem with my car... when the boost builds it seems to max out and whole car hesitates....then picks up again... then hesitates... i was thinking that the wastegate might be stuck and the boost keeps building until the fuel cuts off. maybe that could be the problem .... also whenever the turbo kicks in i can hear a clanking/grinding noise.. i'm assuming since it only happens when the boost comes on it is turbo related... maybe i need to start looking for a second hand turbo from the junkyard??

Since I refilled the tank the problem seems to have gone away. Would crap fuel account for this issue?

I doubt it, but it sounds like it may be a fuel issue. Not sure if EA82T's are EFI but could be a surge problem if you had a close to empty tank. My EFI ford escort had a similar sounding problem under full throttle. It was a combinaton of surge and a malfunctioning EFI pump. Not sure of the fuel system for EA82T so cant be of more help sorry.

This does sound like a fuel issue, some crap in the tank may have contributed to the problem, although see how she goes - hope you changed the fuel filter though.
Toyota 105 Series LandCruiser (that nobody on here wants to really hear about).
RX Touring Wagon - fitted out for 4WDing (currently collecting dust).
RX Project - will be road only at this stage (and currently taking way to long to finish).

yah i'm thinking fuel filter, a full tank of premium and some fuel system treatment will solve the problem. the car that i bought was sitting for a while before i bought it... i just got it running a few days ago.. as far as i know it was sitting for many months...

did some beach work on the weekend in the ea82t and after a bit of work in the ruts and some boost it went weird on me... sounded like it was running on 3 cylenders, ran very rich, boosted extremely fast and had more than nomal intake noise (very loud flutter)... off boost ran ok then on boost was like it was running rich.... radiator coolant was bubbling hot and coming back through the resivor but gauge was fine on the normal temp.... let it cool off and checked leads, turbo, oil and water was all fine... coasted it back into town and let it cool down... then drove it again and it came good....

any idea's? oxygen sensor? some sort of sensor playing up...?
quite bad fuel economy aswell.... looked at the computer (3 plug type) and it had a constant light on it (not flashing at all!)

started it up today and when it came on boost blew alot of petrol smoke

can you help me diagnose it?

cheers

hmm when u said there was more intake noise/ fast boost/ 3 cylinders- im thinking maybe theres a leak in the intercooler or air tubes letting boost escape. but if it came good again maybe not. havent got any other ideas.

but if its any consolation my 82t was playin up the other night too when i tried racing this red haired fellow in his commonwhore (from ausubaru :p)- boost/fuel momentarily kept cutting out a little when i had the right foot planted.
