13B turbo or EJ20 turbo

Post by subarursliberty » Tue Nov 22, 2005 11:27 am

I put the following question on the RS forums because I know it was thrown around as an offtopic question some years back. Well now its for real and I guess its your turn to give me some feed back. I put it here in open slather. Roast me if you wish or give me the big thumbs up. Anything goes guys I want to hear what you have to say. I have no feelings.

Which engine should I put in the Leone AWD. The common way with the EJ20t or a 13B turbo hooked up to the subaru AWD drivtrain?

Also has anyone got any diamensions for a 13B. Mainly from the front of the pulley to the back of the motor. Just to see if it will fit.

So here is the plan if it goes ahead. Keep this in mind to guys it wont be a daily driver and it will be used as a track car. Mostly curcuit with a blast down the quarter to what it can do.

Series 4/5 RX7 13B turbo when blown rebuilt
Backed by a 4.44 WRX 5 speed box when blown straight cut
Rear diff will have to be built with RS LSD centre or mechanical later with 4.44 ratios. Its to hard to change the rear shafts in the Leone.
This is all of coarse if I can get the engine in the engine bay height and length and if I can get an adapter plate made up for the gear box. I recon this thing would screem and turn alot of heads.

Im gonna be different and say: 13BT

How many Kw's do you want this motor to produce, realistically? I think that's the first question to be asked.

gearbox/front diff is going to be a big drama with the 13BT, i think.

I've seen a 13B in an RX Turbo before. I say go with the rotor - they're cool little motors.

I can see a problem though. Going quick in a rotor means you need to spin the tires to stop it bogging down. There are times when perfect traction isn't such a good thing, and as 13B turbos really need to rev an AWD box may not be the best thing.

On that same issue of traction, EJ20 turbos are quite versitile engines with bags and bags of usable power. Unlike most turbo 4-pots, I've always found them to have strong torque that is matched perfectly with the AWD box in it's standard form. Yes there is still some lag, but generally they are strong mid-range performers.

If you do wanna match it (the 13B to EJ 'box), VolksConversions (John Sherman) does an adaptor and flywheel.

I always thought the rotory was the perfect non subaru engine to use(on road) but you need to take a leef of of Tasbrat's book and Supercharge it to get the grunt down low.

Yep rotary will fit in near any car - very small.

Might not be the best for offroad, rotaries lack torque and only really have decent power in the extremely high revs. (this is especially true for the low compression turbo motors).

I'd be pretty interested in seeing the adaptor plate you use if you go down this road, I have a couple of RX-7s and I'd love to try an AWD box in the 13b turbo one :p

You have problems breaking Mazda axles as it is, how do you think it will go with weak-ass Subaru CV joints? :D

Kwijmbo who used to post on these forums put a 13B-T into his GLF5 coupe, but I haven't heard much from him since he got flamed for the concept about 2 years ago. Hopefully the Subaru community has calmed a bit about this form of "sacrelidge" as I feel it is as much an engineering feat as the EJ conversion, if not more of one.
If I was to re-do my coupe from scratch I'd still go the EJ20T, I like the power delivery and they give a nice deep exhaust note that means business. That's not to say I don't like the rotary camp, had a bridgeport 13B with a 350 holley keep up with me one night, but its not for me.

I'm going to leave the 13B idea alone for the next project. 240Z 20B I heard my brain say one night. That should piss some Z peeps off.

But for now i'm going to get my EJ22 next week and then the fun begins. I can't wait for this thing to be finished to tell you the truth. This thing is going to hammer. I'll give one thing away and the only thing I will be using from the EJ22 is the block.

Was going to comment on the rotary power as it is not a bad idea but i am more liking the EJ idea as i prefer the engine note to the chook cooker note

Most people hate the noise so much (as they hear it blast past them and off into the distance)....

BRAAAAAAAPPPPPPPPP!!!!

Can't wait till I've done my EJ20 conversion to the L series anyways, best of both worlds. Two "unconventional" engines in my cars.
Turbo Boxer and Turbo Rotary :D

I read in a magazine about someone putting a 13B-T & subaru 4wd box into a 4x4 Alfa sedan.
Now that's something worthwhile doing!
But a RWD 20B-T Brumby would be something to watch out for

Post by kwijmbo » Thu Jan 05, 2006 7:31 pm

Hi guys,

I don't get around here much anymore but thought I should pop in and tell you that I now have my car running.

In case you can't remember, its the WRC blue leone coupe you saw at the bbq years ago.

Yes it does now have a Series V 13b turbo in it with an awd box.

I will get some pics and show you asap.

Look out for me - altho i actually waved to one of u blokes on here with backyard boys sticker on their windscreen and they didn't even recognise the car - call yourself subaru nuts...hehe :P

Look foward to your feedback.

Paul
