Cooler Air Induction on an L Series (Snorkel)

So what does Jaffa do when its 40+ degrees and its decided that it is to hot to go 4WD... you attempt to kill 2 issues at once, 1) Attempt to find some cooler air for the engine and 2) prepare for the wet seasons numerous water crossings of course.

This is not the most elegant thing I have ever made however its not PVC and so far its working. Actually I am not sure that the pictures does it justice, it will be interesting to see if it remains as well – I am not about looks (com'n I 4WD in Pugs) but for a first draft/attempt at a working model at this stage i am ok with it.

As we know these things are scarce for a Subaru and i wanted 1 with as few bends as possible, hence it not going into the panel closer to the door, with this design i have also been able to retain the original air box set up. The other bonus was that this was WAY cheaper then the factory thing.

What it has done is increased the impressive induction noise as you can now hear the turbo spooling up in the snorkel pipe and the air being rammed/sucked in - hmmm impressive induction noise, well for an EA82T it is ;-)tehe

This has so far proven to be noticeable but not invasive, and i took it for a drive in some monsoonal rain we had here the other night and it appeared to drink very minimal amount water (like about half a tea spoon) and there is a small 6mm drainage hole in the bottom of the air box and the small amount of water was heading it that direction anyway.

As you can see from the pic's it could be better but and could possibly do with some minor tweaks, so i will see. If other have some feedback (positive or negative) and/or suggestions i am open to hearing it - i have only posted on here at Subarino's request (and thanks for hosting the pics Dave)

As for performance, like Subarino, i have not noticed a huge spike in power (nor would i have expected to) however it has increased a little bit for us as i have a 3" pipe feeding air (to an original air filter and not an after market unit) as apposed to a little piece of plastic picking up air on the inside of the guard. In addition to this i also know its clean cooler air.

Now all we have to do Subarino is find some deep puddles (and maybe move our stereo gear off the floor).

No kidding,.. it sounds like it will be good

Put a K&N sticker on it, then you will notice a power increase.

These is what i did on my brumby works well, however could be expensive if you can't weld stainless. I have now sealed up the original air box. I also run flexible pipe down the inside of the guard as straight as possible. That was my solution. The bends are either 90 degrees or 45 degrees. The L is slightly different but could use the same design roughly.

Looks like this thread is going to turn into a bit of a show on tell on snorkel designs so i will add mine in the mix too.

hows visability? does it increase the size of the pillar? looks good any way

Mine does slightly behind the pillar, but out the windscreen you can't see it. I am guessing everyones would be around the same, only just seeable?

I can not see any of it out of the windscreen from the drivers side and throught the window increaces the A pillar by about 1cm - have not looked from the silly seat although the boss has not complained about it so it must be ok.

have you got a problem with my Pvc pipe jaffa?

i actuallly agree the spool and flutter is heaps better but what you should do if u want more good turbo sound is replace the pipe work between the turbo and the TB with some better flowing stuff, and then while your at it put a WAIC on the car... u can hear the turbo doing everythign from a new all improoved fluter to hearing it spool up and even the different rates of spool...

definatly a good thing

is there even much point in putting a snorkel on a non diesel car coz once water gets in the electrics it'll die anyway? surely a snorkel will just delay the enevitable? or am a little wrong

i am 100% sure a snorkel would have saved 2 of my motors from drowning.

Water might stop the car if it gets into the electrics but it wont blow your motor... it's for peace of mind not for actual deep water crossings.

I could have saved thousands of dollars if i had one from the start.

no... but now i don't stress when im doing a water crossing.... worst case... car stops.... pull it out... dry some wires... and off ya go.

Same height water... same scenario... people without a snorkel would be looking for a new motor.

I think i have proven my point.... water craossings have cost me well over the $3000 mark... $400 snorkel makes me sleep better.

LOL sorry... just trying to prove a point.... although it makes less sence to put a snorkel on a subi than a Diesel car... it's far from pointless.

ok fair enough. maybe i should look into it for the many water crossings we have in wa lol.
also i read if ya get stuck halfway i heard u can jolt the car out an inch at a time by turning the key in gear.

btw snorkel looks nice jaffa.
