liberty female style diff.

Post by stamp_licker » Fri Nov 10, 2006 1:19 pm

Got myself one vlsd diff with the female attached cups. Its running l shafts attached to the lib inner cup. What i need to know is if the inner cup has come away from the diff about 10mm could the circlip have fallen off?is there any play?have heard the shafts pull out under load, but this is pulling the cup out of the diff. This has happened while jacking the car up and letting the shafts hang down with the weight of the wheels, the boots were looking stretched to their limits.

yep except mine only look like that when the shaft is hanging down on a angle not sitting flat.up there where your tone wheel is ,is where its pulling the cup away exposing a little of the shaft that is normally inside the diff.

Hi Postie

I have had that problem with a couple of those diffs. On one I replaced the circlip (it hadn't fallen off, it had just 'gone soft' and didn't do its job anymore) and it was fine. The other (I still have it) didn't rectify the problem with a new circlip. I'm not sure why, but assume there is some sort of damage around the groove inside the diff that locates the circlip.
The circlip is part no. 28096AA000. from Subaru. I think it's the smaller one. This side (the side with the smaller circlip) has been the culprit both times for me, from memory it was the drivers side.

Thanks for the part no.It just came clean out of the diff today as i rolled into the driveway made a bit of noise considering the car was stationary when it happened.

Basic problem is the plug in inner cups(94> lib/WRX) do not have enough travel/length/whatever to do the job....makes the shafts too shorts and forces the snap rings to let go....

Best fix, get some L series stubs out of a L diff(undo that f`er of a torx head bolt holding the shaft in. Take them to a machinist with the late model diff and get them to machine a snap ring groove in the right spots(diffrent left to right). Pop those in the diff and install your original L shafts and inner cups.

If you really want I could supply these shafts machined and ready to use for ~$100 exchange.
