diff breather

Post by stamp_licker » Wed Sep 27, 2006 9:15 am

seeing as my diff has no breather, just a hole, it thought it might be a good time to add one.Any ideas on how to go about as in the 4wd style of running it elsewhere and how to insert something into the diff for the hosing to connect to.
Thanks

i used a bit of pvc hose that was a press fit in there, and used sikaflex to make sure it stayed

then put the original breather bit on the end of the hose and put it as high as i could

Does anyone have a pic of where the breather is on the front diff?

Trick to the rear breather is use a right angle connector in 12mm(1/2 inch) black poly connector (get from hardware store) pushed in, with the flange cut off. This usually seals well and suitable hose to run it high and dry. This is what i did and seems to work well and very cheap insurance....

i,ve ended up tapping a thread and screwing in a air line fitting.the only other trick is i'll have to drill a hole in the moustache to feed it thru.

I just cut a square section out of the diff holder for the hose to fit in ... but drilling a hole will be just as good. good thinking with tapping a thread into it btw. I run a hose straight into mine, is a super-tight fit and it goes up into the boot area of the car via rubber grommet spot that was already there.

for the front breather I found a piece of hose that fits on the dipstick area perfectly so it went onto that and then downsized to garden hose and went through to the passengers footwell via one of the heater hose holes ( you might want to find a better place and keep your heater though :P ).

Sorry to dig up an old post but thanks bluesteel, matt, stinky and the_postie! I've just done this today on my wagon, and am happy with the results. The car's still a long way from driving, but the relocated breather looks the trick!

I have to do this at work sometimes to the front & rear diffs and transfer cases of 79 and 100 series mining spec vehicles. I'd figured I would do the same on my Subaru, and a quick board search turned up what I needed to hear!

Thanks again!
